SCOTUS kicked off arguments in their new term today and it also marks 20 years of Roberts being the Chief Justice.

So how do you view the 20 years of SCOTUS decisions under his direction? Any other cases that stand out?

Some of the major cases:

Medelln v. Texas
Heller
Citizens United
Obamacare cases (NFIB v Sebelius, King v Burwell, California v Texas, Hobby Lobby)
Shelby County v. Holder (VRA case)
Obergefell
Janus
Rucho v. Common Cause
Bostock
Dobbs
Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard
303 Creative LLC v. Elenis
Loper Bright

Not a fan of the Bostock or Obergefell rulings or Sebelius/Burwell, but there is a lot to like in some of these decisions - religious/compelled speech protections (Hobby Lobby, Janus, 303 Creative, Espinoza), affirmative action overturned, Chevron deference gone, gun rights (Heller/Bruen).

Did you really leave out Trump v. US?

I don't think the immunity ruling was a surprise - just affirmed what most everyone believed.

Nah, before that we had some ambiguity to be sure, but it was far from generally accepted.

Why else did Ford pardon Nixon if not because he believed Nixon could be prosecuted? And people thought it was a big deal at the time - the pardon dominated the news for weeks, and was considered one of the most significant acts with respect to the presidency of the 20th century.

20 years? This is a make me feel old thread.

On the other hand maybe he will be done in the next 3 years (yeah yeah I know). Trump picking the next chief justice would be glorious.

There was US v Nixon, Nixon v Fitzgerald, Jones v Clinton, and Trump v Vance that offered clues. As far as the Ford pardon, there's like 3-4 different narratives, but I don't want to derail this thread.

Citizen's United is by far the most damaging to the country. It just increased the amount of money flowing into DC exponentially.

I personally hated Kelo v New London due to my disdain for eminent domain and civil forfeiture.

Loper Bright is one of the best things that has come out of SCOTUS in a long, long time. When the dust settles on this one, I think it might be the largest rollback of federal power in the history of the Republic. Meaning, Federal Power was meaningfully rolled back for about the first time ever.

Bondi v. Vanderstok has affected me more directly than any of the other SCOTUS cases.

(My 10/45 light is quieter than a Swingline stapler).

Dobbs took the most guts. Roe v Wade was such bad, bad jurisprudence, even though most politicians wanted the status quo to remain.

Texas v Pennsylvania was the opposite of Dobbs. Zero guts in not even hearing the case. A bunch of yellow panty wearing cowards for that.

Kelo was before Roberts. Not LONG before, but still before.

I'm a big fan of, Full Stop.

It's a really good indication I don't need to dig into what someone says to see if there is actual merit to it.

The taney court- the one who decided dred scott....

Look, you can be upset with the way the court de ides things. Insert gif: welcome to the party pal.

But, when you get all hyperbolic about it, you lose credibility.
