A few months ago, I posted about TVs capturing your data and sending back to the mothership.

Does someone here work in our Texas AG department? :-)

If so, a big thumbs up.

Other sectors do this, but TV manufacturers are the worst for taking your data, forcing you to take updates, and changing their privacy policies; leaving no way to opt out without losing features you paid for or even disabling the set.

Glad to see our team working to keep the property we paid for OUR PROPERTY.

Those ultra cheap 50" TV's come with a price and it's called YOUR DATA.

Well I have one that I was wishing they WOULD push an update on.

During the YouTubeTV vs Mouse fight I tried a FUBO trial. Same(ish) LG TV in the bedroom as the den, just a few years apart. LG though doesn't seem to be pushing OS updates to the older units so after some digging, sure enough Fubo App isn't available for 2018 and older LGs.

Wasn't going to switch to that lagy app anyway, but that was certainly going to seal the deal

Not that this is really effective, but I never do the updates and run a separate appleTV for all of mine at the present, just keeps the 'ecosystem' simpler, although I must of course point out that Apple is…very far from saintly in their own data collection etc.

I have one Sony and a gaggle of Samsungs that are all around 3-6 years old and I just don't really like the variability/dealing with the apps on any of the TV's themselves, no matter what the claims were about speed etc. The Sony is my main TV (84") and I just no longer even notice the little bell going off when it comes on telling me an update is available.

I just realized why that thing is called a remote.

It is never near me.

I managed snag at 46" Sony in 2008-2009 right before HDTV prices crashed. Regardless, it still works fine. I've been running a Roku with it for many years with no issues. I realize that Roku and all the apps are gathering data on me, but my dumb TV isn't.

yep, and I block the known IP addresses LG uses to push notifications/updates on my router. But they must have changed them, recently getting the notification every time I turn on the TV. Will have to see if that will fix it.

We really on have 1 TV for watching shows etc., but I got a 42 OLED for my desktop, she saw it, and welp...happy wife...

so 3, all LG.

It does take a bit more work to make this work as a desktop. But very good upsides; eliminated my using dual monitors almost entirely.

Roku or GTFO. Best interface, and you can get rid of 95% of the ads and bloat.

My pug ate four Roku remotes in a year. I wasn't even mad. Was kind of impressed.

You don't think Roku sells your data?

Exactly!

I remember around 10 years ago when the new Microsoft Xbox came with a Cameral/Mic device that they required you to use.

Everyone flipped out... "I'm not putting THAT in my living room to spy on me!!!". All the while they were perfectly OK taking their smartphone with them everywhere, including the bathroom.

I never hook my smart TV up to the internet. Not sure if they are beaming stuff back to the mothership through some other connection (I highly doubt it), but I never have updates, and the Ads that I do see on the TV never change. All my smart connections happen outside of my TV, through Xbox or Ruku or whatnot.

So, I want to thank each and every one of you that DO hook up your smart TV for making mine a whole hell of a lot cheaper.

As for the litigation, let's say Samsung is found guilty.

In these types of cases, is there a way that the government can bring the case where the actual people harmed get compensated?

I would think that stuff with digital privacy would be perfect for this type of regulation.

If the FTC finds out that Samsung is stealing identity stuff, the FTC can bring suit, but name the actual consumers harmed in a class as co-plaintiffs. In order to keep juries from going totally ape-**** on Samsung, make damages for this sort of stuff statutory. On top of the fines that go to the government, each consumer harmed gets a record of what was stolen, and get paid $X. Not sure what $X should be, but something meaty, like at least $100 per individual, with some reasonable max, like $1,000 per individual. Punitive damages could be triple. Maybe make a carve-out for repeat offenders of the same law where punitive damages are uncapped.

Start with specifically TV manufacturers, since they are almost all foreign companies. Then, let it creep into everything. Next thing you know, you have consumers clambering for more privacy checks, and then the market starts to really take privacy seriously. You take the regulatory capture off the table here, as politicians now have a direct incentive to go after manufacturers to keep their freeloading voters happy.

There is nothing in place right now that allows this, right? If not, what is there to stop such a law from being passed?

If y'all are fired up about the TV, wait until you hear what they do with your phone.

Since the dawn of infomercials and door to door sales people, your information has been sold resold and sold again. No amount of blocking is going to stop your information being sold.

TVs aren't even the top 10 biggest threat. That 1k piece of hardware you use everyday to talk, text and internet browse on, has more information on you than your spouse.

Anyone who uses an Alexa or a Siri might want to check what information is being sold. Those bad boys are listening to your conversations even with the power off.
Taxes are just a yearly subscription to the country you live in.

From what I've seen, if they're collecting data off one of your devices, they're collecting through them all if you use the same apps on all of them.
