This politico article goes into DeSantis' public statements and positions on AI. His position is in contrast to Trump's position.

But it very much fits the anti-intellectual, anti-science positioning of MAGA in general. Now adding in anti-technology, which would fit with the traditional leftist populist position of being anti-automation in order to protect the working class status quo.

He's laying a big bet that this position will propel him into more power. And if he gains power, then all the moneyed interests in AI will have to go through him in order to have the governmental permission to get xyz things done. Not that I think DeSantis will ever be president. In fact, this is yet another reason why I think he fails.

Being anti-AI is like being anti-car in 1920. Or anti-electricity in the time of Edison. Sure there are problems with AI, and there needs to be discussion and safeguards. But bringing out the pitchforks is just a play for power that has nothing to do with reality.

Being skeptical of and understanding AI has its limitations , and being cautious about the breadth and speed of its adoption is not equal to being anti-intellectual or anti-science . Nice try tho.

It's common sense

DeSantis is positioning himself differently then Trump.
Next sentence: this position shows how dumb MAGA is.

You would think those two things contradict each other but when you got the TDS I guess you dont care.

As did I.

Until some Democrat can explain the actual, real science that proves that a man who thinks he is a woman can actually become a woman, I'll take a hard pass on anything from that side of lunacy telling me that my beliefs are anti-science.

Here's the AI divide in a nutshell:

One side - If we inhibit AI development in any way we will lose to China.
The other side - If we let AI grow without any rules, we will destroy ourselves.

Right now, the Tech Right, thru Vance (+Sacks, Musk, Ellison, Thiel, et al) have the pen and completely tossed Biden era AI governance.

But there is a growing backlash against Data Centers (water/electricity prices) and against AI itself taking our jobs thats starting to percolate among the MAGA right...and beyond the Bannonite NatCon types...you've got normie republicans like DeSantis and Cox also starting to push back.

This isn't a clean "left/right" issue...will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The following Democrats have come out against AI and data centers to feed them. Is there a Politico article on their push back? Do you think they are anti-science as well?

- Bernie Sanders
- Elizabeth Warren
- Chris Van Hollen
- Richard Blumental
- Ed Markey
- Ron Wyden

The whole premise of the article is such a childish way of looking at a very complex subject. Your'e either black or white and ignores the infinite number of different shades in between . Done purposely no doubt in a ridiculous attempt to divide . Laughable tbh.

This sorta solidifies my theories around Desantis. Overall I do like him and would need to explore his positions on AI more, but he took a pretty big (yet calculated) risk with COVID in 2020 and it paid off.

Imagine if the fears would've been true, that COVID would morph into something like the spanish flu? He would've killed his political career with his anti vax, anti lockdown approach.

But he took the calculated risk and it paid off really well for him.

Now he's doing the same with AI?

It's very confusing for some people when they realize that not all Republicans have the exact same views on every single issue, and don't just fall in line whenever the Democrats decide what the current "Science Be Praised!" party line is. Like when they went from anti-vax to pro mandatory vax with the changing of the occupant at the White House.

Development of AI has some very serious questions to be answered.
This was brought home for me when it became known that ChatGPT aided in the commitment of suicide by a teenager. Unscrupulous developers could be devastating to industry. The enormous demands on energy need to be handled properly as are the needs for cooling water.
I took DeSantis remarks as cautionary, not complete negativity as the OP insinuates as does the Politico article.
