I grow tired of hearing all the excuses about why folks are in the United States illegally and how oppressive we are for attempting to enforce our immigration laws.

For some comedy and education, I'd like to hear about your experiences traveling to other countries and dealing with their systems to get a visa and enter the country legally.

It would also be fun to hear some illegal immigration stories if you've got any of those. Or, some stories where you had some contraband confiscated at the border / port of entry.

Thanks in advance!

Here's one from me just to warm things up.

This past weekend, I attended a child's birthday party and a guy named Osama made some small talk with me about my vacation trip to Saudi Arabia last year. He asked what it was like going back after all this time and given how much things have changed in the culture. He had lived in Jeddah for 2 years in the 2010s so he was familiar with the strict rules in The Kingdom.

I told him that the first culture shock was getting off the plane and going through immigration. I already had my tourist visa but I still had to show my passport and provide fingerprints, etc.

The border security agent was a female. That was a shock to me since historically, women were not allowed to have public facing roles like this where they would have to interact with random members of the public.

She was fully covered so that was "normal" in my book. And she spoke decent English so that was helpful.

All my paperwork was in order so all I needed to do to enter the country was provide my fingerprints. This is where I had a problem.

The fingerprint machine was one of these ones where you place your fingers on the glass and it scans them.

Left and Right thumbprints, no problem. But the fingers, they wanted all four fingers per hand, read together at the same time. This was next to impossible. Especially for my right hand with my Aggie Ring on it.

The scanner glass was small, maybe 4 inches wide and you needed to get all 4 fingertips down at the same time. After a couple of failures, the border guard lady asked me to try some hand sanitizer to see if that improved the reading. It didn't help much.

I must have tried about 10 times for my left hand and 20 times for my right hand to get all 4 fingers read at the same time. Every iteration, it would tell you which of your 4 fingers were read successfully and which one(s) failed. It reminded me of that old game "Mastermind" where you tried to match all 4 pegs and you'd get clues about which guesses of the 4 were correct. https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m58865595343

If you've got your Aggie Ring on and you want to play along at home, try to put your 4 fingers together. I wind up with kind of a Mork from Ork - Nanu Nanu which was not acceptable.

If you get cute and try to just curve your hand and bring your fingers together, they're at too much of an angle to read the fingerprints on the scanner. Eventually, after more hand sanitizer and more attempts, I decided to use my left hand to squeeze my fingers on my right hand together into the correct form to get read by the scanner.

When the fingerprint reading was finally all finished, I breathed a sigh of relief and so did the border guard lady. Now onward to baggage claim and customs.

They X-rayed all my stuff and sent me on my way relatively easily. Next was negotiating the taxi scammers.

Anyway, re-telling this story reminded me that we've got folks out here acting like the USA deporting illegal aliens is a criminal act. Meanwhile, many of us have jumped though a lot of hoops to visit other countries that these folks have not gone through to enter our country. I'm curious about what your stories are.

Got held up in Shanghai for 3 hours because we put the samples in my bag when going through security.

Just a heads up, the Chinese don't like to see containers filled with fine white powder...

In HS, I went on a school trip to tour Europe in '99. Arriving into Ireland, we were going through customs and a girl from my school cut in front of me to be next to her friend. The customs guy saw it, smiled at me, and pulled her aside and pretty much unpacked her entire bag.

Went to Guatemala in the early 2,000s. On our way way from Guatemala City American Airlines had their own bag scans at the gate. There was an Air Mexicana airlines leaving and as we went thru Guatemalas security i watched a man pull out a large knife, hand it to the security guy, went thru and the knife was given back to the man

On Arrival back from Guatemala we went thru Miami this time. Immigration flagged me at the Miami Airport and made me go sit in a room with others. They call me up and ask me why I was traveling to Guatemala. Told them the reason. I sit some more and they send me to get my bags. I go to the area and they have my bags strewn open digging thru all of it. They tell me its clean and make me repack my bag. I ask why I was flagged and they said there was a drug dealer with my exact name that left to Guatemala in 1985 and they had to check me. In 1985 I was in 6th grade. Never got flagged before in DFW amd Houston from Guatemala.

Early 2000s, just after HS graduation. Me and a couple friends went to Australia and New Zealand. We flew from Auckland to Brisbane. On arrival in Brisbane, the customs officer (nice middle aged lady) wanted to see hotel reservations, return flights, and whether we had sufficient funds for our stay. I guess that makes sense for some 18 year olds who showed up on tourist visas.

ETA: wife and I flew into Marrakech about 10 years ago. Immigration officer took a quick look at our passports, looked at us, stamped them and waved us on. Moroccan citizens got serious grilling as they passed through. That was odd.

Flew to St John's Canada from Europe in a Marine aircraft on the way back to the US. Canadian customs guy had an attitude when he came to our plane, and said "I've seen a lot of Marines come through here but I've never seen you". I replied: "that's neat because I've been to Canada before and I've never seen you." He left soon after. Cool story bro.

Pre-9/11 we would cross the US-Mexican border at Boquillas. Pay a $1 to get ferried across the Rio Grande, and then $1 to ride a donkey into town (if you wanted) and go get hammered at the in-town bar on Soto.

Would do the same coming back. No border patrol in site. Just freely roaming across the border.

About 30 years ago took the car ferry from Bar Harbor over to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. in rental car with RI plates as I recall. Anyway, when we landed pulled out my Texas DL as identification (all you needed then). Drove up to Immigration (woman) first question 'You are from Texas?" A. :Yes * , Immigration: " you have any guns in car?"

I have been lectured by an immigration agent in Paris.

30+ years ago, Italian immigration and customs agents boarded our bus with sub-machine guns and checked passports when traveling between Switzerland and Italy (I think it was), back when you had to visit immigration at each European country's border.

My dad had a can of haggis confiscated at DFW after a trip to Scotland. I personally brought several Cuban cigars back on the same trip with no issue.

I had a minor student traveling with me try to bring a bottle of rum in from Costa Rica, which caused quite the kerfuffle until her 21+ brother claimed it and brought it in.

I saw a 60+ couple traveling with my group have issues at the Kremlin because they left a cell phone behind after being instructed to be sure to keep all their belongings together.

Flew into Heathrow last year and luggage was completely unpacked and inspected item by item. That's never happened in a US airport, even on the way back in from numerous overseas trips.

Hit the train station in Florence, Italy year before last and the Italian military armed with rifles asked me for my passport. I started yelling and crying about Nazis and discrimination and such.

Yep. Spring break South Padre in mid-90s a friend of mine and my GF at the time simply drove across border at Matamoros and went inland a few hours. No idea where they went but he was on some kind of quest to find a certain bottle of tequila or some ***** I didn't really care. I think I told them, "Good luck". And went back to drinking.

Imagine doing that now. No way in hell. And I refused to do it then when it was "relatively" safe.

Outside of one over zealous customs agent in Zurich can't really say I've had any problems, other than long lines, either in Europe or Latin America.

The most I have ever been hassled is by the TSA or US Customs trying to come back in to the US.

In India on the entrance form they ask you if your grandmother was Muslim.

Took two hours of standing in a long line to get into Brussels in October. Meanwhile, they had a shorter line for the huge influx of PRC tourists. Muslims were sailing through with their Euro passports.

I was 16 doing a family mission trip in laredo with my church, mom & dad didn't go. Not a big deal, just stayed with a friend & their family.
One day we all decided to go walk across the border and do some shopping on the Mexico side. Walking over wasn't a problem, coming back got stopped. US custom agent asked for my documentation so I handed him my Texas drivers license. He asked where my parents were since I was 16 & crossing the border. When I told him my parents weren't with me but back in Houston he informed me that I needed a notorized letter that my parents were fine with so-and-so from the church taking me to Mexico & back.

Fortunately, he allowed me to enter the country.

Been to Mexico hundreds of times- no problems either way

Traveled all over Europe for work about 2 months of each year - no problems either way

Was going through tiny little Manchester New Hampshire airport with family and they tell me they need to check my back pack. They take away my little nail clipper with a 1 inch file on it because they said it could be used as a knife. I traveled with those clippers in my bag for years all over the place

Last year I drove through the checkpoint from Switzerland just above Milano and the Italian border patrol dudes waived me through when I held up my US passport. Barely slowed down.

Not unlike the US, I really think it just depends on what kind of day they're having.

I worked in Mexico at one point, traveling over the border and back everyday.

Temporary works visas felt like a joke. Like just very unofficial.

I had some fireworks in my trunk that were confiscated on the Mexico side. I'm sure the had fun with those.

When I was walking in Madrid 20 years ago near the train station a group of Gypsies approached me.

one starts grabbing on my right side, while another came up on the left and put their hand into my laptop bag.

a crowd of Spaniards came over and attacked and drove them off.

only when I got to the hotel did I realize my passport was nearly taken.

The summer before Covid, we went to Scotland. I think before we landed in Edinburgh, we filled out customs forms on the plane. When we got off the plane, we just followed the crowd and the next thing we knew we were in baggage claim and rental cars. Never even saw an immigration or customs desk. I was paranoid the rest of the day, and my wife was mad she didn't get a Scotland stamp on her passport.

We lived in Calgary AB for two years on an expat assignment for O&G. It was fantastic. Daughter was born there. No problems with anything.

But hey, they enforced their immigration laws and no handouts, at least not without documentation.
  • 3-4 months of all the approvals to get a work visa sponsored by the company.
  • Shipping an 18-wheeler worth of stuff - provide proof of legal residency
  • register for medical ID to be able to see a doctor, get shots, have a kid, etc. - provide proof of legal residency
  • get a driver's license - provide proof of legal residency
  • renting a place - provide proof of legal residency
  • register vehicle and get plates - provide proof of legal residency
  • local auto insurance - provide proof of legal residency
  • Open a local bank account - provide proof of legal residency
My wife had to get her Canadian DL and show proof of legal residency including my work visa and our marriage license. The registration office (privatized) didn't believe our Texas Marriage License was legit as it has an "old school" design to it. She had to go 2-3 different times before a clerk believed her.

Back in college, we did something similar. Took some buddies to SPI and Matamoros for spring break. But we quietly left back across the border when federal police showed up with a truck and a mounted machine gun and pointed it at the door of the neighboring bar.

A couple of fun ones:

Canada

Went up there for some meetings with a client. They are very protective of making sure that you 1)aren't going to become a drain on society & 2)making sure you aren't taking jobs away from Canadians. For the former, we had letters from our company saying that we were employed, had health insurance, and the company was responsible for paying to get us home. For the latter, you are permitted to attend meetings but you should never mention the word work when asked why you are there. You are there for meetings. I breezed through, not an issue. This junior consultant that traveled with me told them he was there for work and got pulled into a back room for 2 hours until they realized he was just there for two days worth of meetings.

Mexico

I lived in Laredo freshman year of high school in the 90s. We'd walk across the border and back. IT was $0.25 one direction and $0.35 the other way. No documentation needed, not even a license. They would just ask you a question that they thought only a US citizen would know (e.g. who won the superbowl last year or world series, etc.). They also had to change their initial question when I was there... they used to ask if you were an American and had to change to US Citizen because some dude was arrested after answering yes and then being Mexican. Turns out he got out of trouble as he was technically an American since he lived in North America.

Vietnam

Went over to see folks in Vietnam for vacation and while I had a visa waiting for me there, I didn't have it with me. When I arrived, I had to go to a small glass window, hand over my passport, several hundred dollars and wait. When they called me back to the window, they gave me my passport back with a visa and I was then able to clear customs. Someone read the visa after I made it through and said that my visa said I was there for work as a commercial fisherman.

One time, I was deported from Saudi Arabia for having the wrong Visa

I filled out the form for multi entry…company contracted by work filed for single entry
I get my passport back and visa is all in arabic…its on me for not verifying
First trip no problem

Second trip…arrive at 3am at the same time as a flight from Afghanistan…these dudes have zero sense of personal space and they are all very short and smelled like a farm
Immigration officer looks at my visa and gets very angry and starts shouting in arabic
Military dude with very large weapon comes and escorts me to the little room
I sit there for four hours thinking I was dead

Then military and customs dude come in and escort me to gate…they rebooked my flight back for the next departing flight
Left at 8am via istanbul

My passport was in a folder with deportation documents until i cleared customs in Houston…it had to be passed from flight captain to customs agent every step of the way. I even had to sit at the front with the bus driver going from the terminal to the airplane in Istanbul

It was exhausting but kind of hilarious after I was safely back home

I took my family to Cozumel in the late 90's, and unbeknownst to me my son purchased a large "cuchilla". Fortunately he had the receipt with him and they let him take the knife in his luggage. I thought they would confiscate it, along with a large chunk of coral I had in my bag.

I remember that they had a machine on which each passenger had to press a large button. It would light up green or red to indicate if you had to be searched.

A few years later, we took some high school kids to Europe. All students were specifically warned about what they were allowed to bring with them, and what was prohibited. One male student smuggled his grandfather's pocket knife on his check-in bag on the flight, but he had it confiscated when we went through a baggage check for a train.

I went to Canada about 18 years ago for work. We were to do training on some equipment that was going to be sent to us. No one told us before we left, that we can't say anything about working. The same thing that happened to your friend happened to three of us. They almost refused us entry until someone from our company, that was based in Canada, got it all squared away.

A few years ago my company had a consulting project with a major client in Quebec. The project ran into some technical issues and I got sent there for one day to get it back on track.
Before landing they handed out cards that asked normal questions about the visit (business or pleasure, etc.). I said I was there to assist with an IT project.
The customs agent read that then pulled me into a back room for about an hour drilling me on what exactly I was doing, then let me go on my way. I told my team about that when I got to the customer site, and they said "Oh yeah, we should have told you say you are doing a sales call or here for a meeting. They are touchy about Americans doing any technical work, as Canadians should be doing that". Lesson learned.
