The military action update thread has an interesting side bar topic that I'd like to discuss. I worked in aerospace & flirted in defense a bit, but I never worked at a prime, only with subs and my BU specifically was avionics.

I cannot conceive of the resources Iran must have used to build so many missiles and drones. It really is staggering.

The drones are like $20K, really cheap. A PAC3 missile is in the millions

Yep bad math. very bad math. We need some new math- or to be more accurate bring back good math. Time to put American innovation to the test. Hunter killer drones, giant tracked multi barreled shot gunesk weapons for low flying drone swarms, Jammers, EMP, microwav emitters. Get creative America. Call the sci-fi writers and get ideas.

What a fun job that would be. The hard part would be getting the cheap components in mass we no longer build and putting together the fabrication we no longer have.

It is an interesting discussion. The federal procurement process is not easy, and it takes time. I expect that the Ukraine war has been an eye opener, and I'm not sure how quickly we've responded. The integration into our defense network is probably a large and costly program, and I'd even assume ongoing to some extent. Can we integrate this with a relatively cheap (hardware) drone? Are we attempting to do so? What's the reality of a "cheap" drone from a purchasing perspective for the US government? I also assume there are quality control & rules of engagement concerns that will always drive up the cost of each drone that we purchase. Anyone have non-classified info on where we are at right now from a drone perspective?

i don't have in depth knowledge on this topic but i had read that we utilized one way drones for the first time against Iran. i think this speaks to some of what you are saying.

Apparently this conflict is the first time we deployed the Lucas.

In one of the threads there was a post about a Hegseth press conference where he said that the U.S. is using drones that are based upon the Iranian design. They are cheap but are much more sophisticated, especially the networking and communications than the original Iranian design.

Apparently, Russia also has improved the original design and are producing them for use in Ukraine.

I had just posted in the war thread about Iran's choice of missiles and drones. It's really the perfect match for them.

This may be the last great "big equipment" offensive we will see. I can't wait to see drone carrier swarms in our future.

Imagine hundreds of loitering surveillance drones, hundreds of on-call fast-action suicide drones, anti-air hunters, long range bombers, jammers, etc, etc. It will really be something truly frightening to see once all this new technology is fully developed and integrated. I think we've only reached the tip of the iceberg, and that goes for what Ukraine has going on as well currently.

Time to take all that video game training to the battlefield!

From your quote it appears that ttu_85 was talking about anti-drone technology.

With cheap production of large numbers of deadly coordinated weapons, defenses can easily be overwhelmed by using such drones. Imagine 100,000 drones headed for your city. Add A.I. technology into their programming then we are approaching real sci-fi level weapons technology.

Hopefully DARPA is already working on this scenario.

By the way, OP's username is perfect for this topic.

And the Iranian drones are based on the much older delta wing fighters (1948). What is old is new again.

I think it remains to be seen how these will operate. How many will be remote piloted vs autonomous? Probably a mix of both.

I think eventually we have a model where like 1 person can remotely control a small squadron at a time. So semi-autonomous with human control at the group level. Will be interesting to see all the operating models that are developed in the near future. If you've seen Ender's Game...maybe something like that.
