The fundamental mistake Pete is making is that he doesn't need "The Atlantic" crowd, in fact he needs to distance himself from them. He needs to connect with the minority base of the party and the union types. Both of those groups are somewhere between disliking him to hating him because they see him as an elitist and all this does is reinforce that. It's like Thomas Massie getting a writeup from Reason talking about how he is rebranding himself as MAGA in a puff piece.
