So, I'll admit we didn't pay as much attention to the implications of the BBB when it happened. We got our taxes back today, and it looks like we're getting a $5,900+ refund. Holy crap!

Thanks Trump! (we definitely need to adjust our numbers for this year)

I didn't get a return, but it took off $2500 in what I owed, which was nice.

No difference in my return amount but I can attribute that to not paying 1099 taxes for my wife's old side gig.

I'm retired with additional 1099 income. I paid less this year. Income was roughly the same as 2024 so I benefited.

I posted about this in another thread. Roth conversions could save folks a lot.

Extending Roth conversion (they were due to die before BBB) gives many the ability to pay tax at current low rates and be done with it. So it works well with 401K's. Could also lower you medicare surcharges in the future and Required Minimum Distributions..

IMO, everyone should look at this and see if it helps. Largely depends on whether you have extrafunds now to take the tax hit.

Big, beautiful refunds for some. For others of us? Well, not so much. Just another year paying out the wazoo. Typical BS from Republicans. Gave in some places, but then took it back elsewhere.

Didn't help us one bit. I actually owe more this year than I did last year.

40k SALT cap helped us tremendously. Overall my tax burden dropped by 1% YoY.

Flipping burgers doesn't pay enough in taxes - like 0 - to get a refund, does it?

Was your income exactly to the penny the same as 2024?

Did you make more money than last year?

I had my withholdings set up to have us pay a few thousand each year since i don't like giving the government interest free loads.

We got about $3k back.

Ended up owing a few thousand less than I had been anticipating. Atta boy DJT.

Huh? The data suggests otherwise…so not a Trump lie.

All the BBB credits that would have otherwise applied to me didn't help because of my income. Which is disappointing however I'm just glad to still have an income; my LinkedIn feed is half people looking for work these days.

There was no real change other than the ones I had a direct impact on like having some capital losses which reduced what I owed.

Only those rich people who depend on tips and Social Security benefitted.

I owed a few thousand less and made more money. Next year I'll get the old people deduction.

had to pay a lot last year plus a penalty. started withholding extra to account for that, so that plus the tax changes led to a big refund this year. I guess I'll adjust my withholding again.

It's nice to brag about getting refunds and such, but did federal spending actually go down or as a nation we are just deeper in debt as Tennessee Ernie Ford use to say in his song 16 Tons?

There is no actual data yet, only simulations that show targeted relief to old folks and lower income earners.

Blue state folks are loving the return of SALT deductions.

Most everything phases out very quickly.

I could see the average citizen getting some small relief because higher income is pretty concentrated in a small group.

most people aren't going to see a meaningful change.

If you took the standard deduction, you are pretty much similar to last year. If you itemized you maybe benefitted from the increased state and local tax deduction to 40k.

no tax on tips and overtime should help some people as well.

Any easy planning tip or those that can itemize but are close to the standard deduction - consider taking the standard deduction in 2026 but itemizing in 2027. If you pay your 1/31/27 taxes in January 2027 and pay your 1/31/28 taxes in December 2027 then you've increased your deductible taxes. you need to model it out too to see what the change would be. if you escrow probably a non-starter unless you can get your servicer to pay at different times. you can flip this to itemizing in 2026 and standard deduction in 2027 if you paid your 1/31/26 taxes in January 2026.

This, no change, more owed, but also made more so, meh, it's a wash.

Even if it was $5000 back, not worth it.

Welp, I had to write a $500+ check and send it to the irs (on top of the $130 fee for Turbo Tax).

That!s what I get for selling stocks to pay an unexpected $400/month escrow deficiency in 2025

Refund? Refund?

No matter how much in estimated taxes I seem too pay, I write another check every April. And no, despite what the blowhard in chief constantly says, the bill did NOT eliminate taxes on social security.
