US Men's Olympic Hockey players want OUT of Canadian NHL teams

I know most of you are not NHL fans here, but this is relevant to politics in a significant way.

In February, the US Men's (and Women's) hockey teams swept both Gold Medal games in the Milan. This was extraordinarily painful for a significant portion Canadian populace who consider Hockey to be their national identity and gold medals their birthright. It was made even worse for Canadian fans because their largely state controlled and state funded media, who previously have stoked anti-American resentment with virtually no pushback, made the olympic hockey tournaments extremely political.

Several US players, including Captain Auston Matthews who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, were chastised and mocked by Canadian mainstream sports and news media, high profile podcasters with large followings, and worse..... were boo'd and chastised by their respective NHL teams' fans.

Now it has become very apparent that many of these US players either wanted and got out -OR- are actively seeking to LEAVE Canada in large part because of the hostility and hysteria around their winning the Gold Medal and celebrating it with the big bad Orange Man in the White House (an international crime of course!).

1. Quinn Hughes was dealt from Vancouver to Minnesota at the trade deadline.
2. Connor Hellebyuck, it is no secret, wants out of Winnepeg currently.
3. Brady Tkachuk, one of the most reviled US team players by Canadian media, essentially demanded a trade out of Ottawa and cited the post-Olympic reaction/response as a major reason why. He was then traded to the Florida Panthers.
4. Auston Matthews himself, considered the best American in hockey by most, has not publicly said anything, but it is well known he too was not happy with Toronto and Canadian media or fans.

"What I believe is the truth is that the way the American players who won the gold medal felt in their Canadian markets...is a factor; I think some of those guys...felt a bit hated and it might have influenced their decisions - 32 Thoughts (6/22)" - Canadian Hockey Journalist Elliotte Friedman

Now you have a situation where the Dallas Stars may need to trade goal scoring leader, American Jason Robertson, because of salary cap constraints. Ottawa now has the roster need, the draft picks and cap space to acquire him, but would want a sign and trade. And it's emerged that Robertson does NOT want to play in Canada either . So now you have other American players, having seen this nonsense in Canada thinking twice, or outright rejecting playing in Canada.

An extremely high tax burden, high cost of living, and a hostile populace and state-aligned media are costing Canadian NHL players high quality American players. Instead of looking inward as to why American players are saying 'no!' - you have Canadian Hockey media saying Canadian teams should perhaps not draft or sign Americans and should never make them captains.

It is only a matter of time before Auston Matthews is dealt from Toronto too. With fans like these below, who can blame them!

Should be easy for the NHL to split with Canada. The league would almost certainly be a separate Canada owned enterprise along with the teams based on Canadian regulations.

**** em. Houston needs a team.

It also gives Canada a chance to win a league championship for the first time in over 30 years.

I have no problem with Canadian players coming to play here. So many of them are good standup guys who work hard and are great on and off the ice. They are NEVER treated with disdain for playing for their home country. Ever.

When Thomas Harley (Stars Defenseman) won the 4 Nations Cup in 2025 with Canada, he was honored by the Stars fans with a standing ovation. The local media noted his significant good play helped Canada win.

No one chastised him for celebrating the win.... with then PM Trudeau quickly posting on X : "You can't take our country and you can't take our game."

We have Canadian snow-bird neighbor friends who keep up updated with the latest outrage and punishment Canadians want to deal to Americans.

My psychological deconstruction is this: Canadians have a terminal inferiority complex that's been seething for generations. Trump busted a cap on it and the emotions are spilling out like a teenage girl who can't find a date to the prom.

I love my friends, and try hard to remind them that the bad orange man who touched them will be leaving office in about 2 1/2 years. Everything will go back to normal. I don't think they hear a word I'm saying.

I probably should have specified that I was referring more to dissolving the Canadian teams rather than kicking out the players themselves. It's about keeping the Canadian FANS out of American pro leagues.

Add that US media rights absolutely dominate the NHL broadcast cash machine. Yes, Toronto/Ottawa still are big markets, but realistically their lack of cash is already why the Oilers etc. haven't been competitive much over the past 30 years to win a championship.

In a divorce, as with their auto industry in the trade agreement pending cancellation notice on July 1 (USMCA), they will be the absolute losers.

How much worse are taxes for players of Canadian teams than US ones? That would probably be reason alone to move teams.

ChatGPT spat this out with no vetting from me so take it for what it's worth:

If you're asking about NHL salary (not endorsements), the highest-paid player for the current 202526 season is Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, with an average annual value (AAV) of US$14 million per year under his contract.
Spotrac +2
If you're asking about total earnings including endorsements, Forbes-style rankings have sometimes placed Auston Matthews at the top at roughly US$20.2 million annually, including about US$5 million in endorsements.
The Sun
How much income tax would Draisaitl owe if he lived in Canada?
Assuming:
He is a Canadian tax resident.
His entire US$14 million salary is taxable in Canada.
He lives in a high-tax province such as Ontario.
We ignore deductions, tax planning, signing-bonus structures, escrow, and U.S. tax credits.
Then a combined federal + provincial marginal tax rate of roughly 53.5% would apply to most of that income.
Approximate calculation:
Income: US$14,000,000
Tax: 53.5%
Tax owed: US$7.5 million
After-tax income: US$6.5 million

For a Texas boy, I actually watched a good amount of hockey back when Gretzky and Messier were playing. Not a minute since and wouldn't go to the Stanley Cup finals if given the tickets. Having said that, anything that hurts or disrespects Canada (the country and their leadership and politicians) I am all for. I despise all things Mexico more than I do Canada, probably because the Canadians are fewer and have not invaded nearly like the Mexicans have.

Canada should start their own version of the NHL.

I'm a big hockey fan and believe it or not, a fan of the Ottawa Senators (long story). So I've been following the Brady discourse on X with interest.

Canadian fans are completely delusional about this issue and many, many others. These players gain NOTHING from playing in Canada -- the country is insanely liberal; the weather is terrible most of the year; the taxes are smothering; the media is brutal; and the lifestyle leaves a lot to be desired.

But the biggest issue is Canada's raging TDS and how it impacted their treatment of the gold medal Americans. What American player would want to stay in that environment? Get the hell out, warm up a bit and keep more of your money. Sounds like a plan.

Most importantly, immigration is absolutely killing Canada's advantages in winter sports. Like the US, they have sold out their national heritage for a third-world takeover. But because they started with such a much smaller population, the impacts have been much faster.

If the Friedkins choose Austin over Houston, I'm done.

I've been waiting for the NHL since 1972, and my time is running out.

And yet, your "snow bird neighbor" is still here or planning on returning when the weather turns bad.

I am sure that you are getting tired of his rhetoric and finally ask him "why are you here?.

Maybe that will shut him up.

I'll say this: I have seen a lot of Canadian comedians in my lifetime who were the funniest people I can remember. I have also met many incredibly intelligent finance people in my private equity experience, and many of them blow away my American counterparts on the intelligence scale. They also mostly went to Americann universities, primarliy Ivy League.

That said, they do indeed have a huge inferiority complex, and a chip on their shoulder. This has been my experience, so it's only worth the letters on this forum in cyberspace.

Hughes was traded a couple of months before the Olympics. The Minnesota GM was also the person who selected the US Olympic team. And Vancouver is in full tank/rebuild mode, they were certainly trading Hughes regardless.
