In another life... that sounds like a cool job

It is a cool job - solving problems daily, and no 2 days are the same. I've made a career of it because climbing around on airplanes and fixing them is just a fun thing to me. Been doing it for close to 30 years. Managing this group is the most fun I've had in probably the last 15 years. Just working along side my team as another engineer, that just happens to do their quarterly performance reviews. No budgets and manpower forecasts, not a ton of politics, just a lot of actual engineering and a little mentoring and managing on the side for me.

Might there be an opportunity for a MechE intern this summer? A junior graduating May '27?

It is pretty late to be looking for internships, most of the ones my daughter applied to had early deadlines just after Christmas break.

Tell them to go to the Aggie career fairs and talk to Ryan Dudark with L3Harris - Great guy, great company, east of Dallas. They hire a ton of Aggies. But they will be filled up for summer internships by now too, sorry.

Does this role focus mainly on metallics, composites, or both?

It is very composites heavy, but there are some metallics. We would love someone with modern composites experience.

All my previous experience was on traditional metallic aircraft with 1960s - 80s "composites." I'm still learning advanced composites on the job (have only been here about 8 months now).

Anyone with real composite experience will have a leg up in both the interviews and picking the job up.

Thank you, Roger. Despite Aggie roots, he's at a small STEM school in the mid-west, so TAMU resources are out of reach.

I appreciate the direction to L3Harris though. They don't list anything for Dallas currently, but they're accepting applications for a couple of spots elsewhere that I shared with him.

He's applied to 100s of opportunities since the fall, but hasn't one landed yet. It seems many are still opening and he's still applying. He's got a couple active in the process, so fingers crossed.

Good luck to your son. It is a hard beat trying to get that first door to crack open far enough to wedge your foot in it. What school does he go to? I grew up in the Midwest before I got lucky and my family relocated to DFW, so I might have heard of it.

Wichita has tons of aerospace companies, I'd suggest a Google search and looking up all their career pages to find any internships.

If he strikes out on internships tell him to go get a job at Chick Fil A or Walmart or anywhere he can put on a resume. I love seeing grunt teenage part time jobs on new grads resumes. It tells me they have dealt with difficult people before, and that I won't be their first boss besides Mom & Dad.

He's at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, IN. While his mom and I would have been thrilled to have him at TAMU, it's been a good fit for him there.

He watches for postings on LinkedIn and RHIT's job board weekly in addition to trolling for opportunities directly on company websites. He applies for everything. He's not picky right now.

He worked at Sonic throughout high school…was the longest tenured employee behind the manager when he left for college, and then he's worked the same warehouse job here locally the past two summers.

I'm really unsure why something hasn't come together for him yet. But, a couple of his roommates are basically in a similar boat currently, also.

Grew up 200 miles from RHIT near Chicago but I had never heard of it before today. I would have ended up at U of IL had my family stayed in Chicago 2 more years.

I don't know what the job market looks like as a whole, but based on some of the resumes that our internal recruiters passed to me I'm guessing it is very spotty for new grads some fields hot and some cold.

I think Cummins Diesel Engines are headquartered in IN, I'm sure he has applied there. I'd hit all the automotive giants for sure. They're more likely to be familiar with his school.

Assuming it's in the research "circle" of Wichita state, that seems to be a nice area. I've visited the campus before in that area and the town reminds me ever so slightly of college station (although much smaller). Sees like a high concentration of really smart folks though in industries across aero, manufacturing, research, and tech.

Yes, very close to WSU. Honestly, a WSU grad with some research in composites at NIAR is my top target, but I have hired so many good Ags over the years into this role that it is hard to break me of wanting to give any Ags that apply priority.
