Kelly said the new stadium will also include a mixed-use entertainment district, new team headquarters, a training facility and mixed-use development for Kansas. The agreement consists of two sections: a $3 billion stadium in Wyandotte County that will open at the start of the 2031 NFL season and a new Chiefs headquarters and training facility in Olathe.

The Chiefs got what every professional franchise wants, an entertainment district. After decades of trying, the white-collar Kansas suburbs finally got the Chiefs (Royals are next). The only thing Jackson County, MO had to offer outside of Arrowhead was tens of thousands of parking spaces and fans who live and die for the team.

Jackson County is predominantly white working-class. These people are HARDCORE Chiefs fans. You see Chiefs flags in cemeteries there. They are *not* the demographic of the upcoming entertainment district in Kansas. I don't really care much about the NFL, but I REALLY LIKE KC, MO, and this sucks for them.

Can they not go to the games in KC, KS? I understand this hurts the county, and possibly to a much lesser extent the state, but does it make that big of a difference to the fans? Do the giants/jets suffer in the fan attendance dept because they play in NJ instead of NY?

Honestly, my biggest objection is that it adds another artificial turf indoor stadium to the league.

Football is meant to be played outdoors, on grass.

And yes, driving to KCK isn't a hardship for KCMO fans. But a stadium that's roughly 10,000 seats less in seating capacity means a whole bunch fewer will be able to get tickets at all.

well, if you're a fan of a warm weather AFC team...

you like seeing a possible cold weather playoff site eliminated

For "HARDCORE Chiefs fans" driving 20 miles must be the end of the world.

Imagine the Aggies building a new stadium in The Woodlands and abandoning Kyle. I know it's not a perfect analogy, but it's close.

I live in MO and people are ticked.

I don't think that's a close analogy at all, unless you think those hardcore fans will be as disinclined to travel 30 minutes as the students. Also, alumni travel from all over the state and beyond, meaning those hardcore fans should have no trouble covering 20 miles to tailgate and attend 8 home games.

But, I appreciate your frustration if you feel a sense of loss and just don't want them to move.

I know the analogy isn't perfect.

I'm thinking less of the travel and more of the "ownership" mindset.

Losing the Chiefs to Kansas is akin to losing the Cowboys to OK or Arkansas for a lot of Missouri Chief fans (I'm not one myself, just surrounded by them)

Not sure about the travel, but I can imagine fans being pissed off by the loss of 10 thousand "regular people" seats, the inevitable insane price hike, and what will more than likely be the complete removal of most of the home field advantage they had (both cold weather elements and crowd noise).

That's a good point, most forget Kansas City is a border city (I always do lol), so the state of Missouri is losing the Chiefs and the state of Kansas is getting them with this move.

And in 6 years Mahomes is going to be 36. He will be a playoff level quarterback for maybe another 2-3 years. But no superbowls will be won unless they draft an amazing defense or offensive weapon or 2.

But that stadium is being maximized for corporate $$. I bet lots of suites.

Its not like that at all.

Its 20 MILES away, in the same Metro area.

Its much close Irving losing the Cowboys to Arlington

Fans are upset with losing the fan friendly atmosphere. The last few fan friendly stadiums are dissappearing. Buffalo is losing theirs and now Kansas City.

When I say fan friendly, I mean larger stadium, no frills, which leads to more affordable tickets. Less corporate.

I went to a playoff game in KC a few years ago, and GREAT tickets were cheaper than nosebleeds in Houston during a losing season.

Corporate stadiums don't have that same feel.

Don't forget that they lost a bunch of seats at Soldier Field when they crashed a spaceship into it 20 years ago. Those seats were all replaced with a wall of suites.

The best analogy is the Cleveland Browns moving from downtown to the suburbs. In both cases, you're telling your fanbase to go eff themselves because there's more money elsewhere.

No way in hell Kansas City, MO was going to come up with a $3 billion stadium. And the Royals tried to get a taxpayer-funded entertainment district in downtown KC, MO. It was going to destroy a ton of existing affordable housing and was defeated by Jackson County voters.

FWIW it's worth, Arrowhead has terrific sightlines, is in great shape, is on the interstate, and is surrounded by tens of thousands of parking spaces (similar setup to Reliant/Astrodome parking-wise). With Taylor Swift at games, I can no longer afford Chiefs tickets, but I'll have to make an effort to catch a college game there before it falls into disrepair.

They're moving slightly further away than the Cowboys did when they went from Irving to Arlington. It's a nothing burger in a vacuum. The outcry you're seeing on social media is almost entirely driven by the fact that Kansas and Missouri hate each other with an unmatched seething passion and the Missouri side can't stand that they're moving across the border.

I have a friend who lives near Leavenworth, KS (he worked at the Fort after he retired from the Army). That's his big gripe - that KS taxpayers are getting stuck with the bill with what is largely a vanity project for the KS political class.

Outrageous. If the owners funded these things themselves, they'd probably be a quarter of the price. Or, God forbid, stadiums would last more than 30 years.

The real slap in the face is that they're purposely lowering the capacity, which means they can raise the ticket prices to any obscene amount they want. You know a franchise doesn't care about its fans when it willingly cuts 10,000 seats out of the stadium, but knows it's going to make a lot more money.

Having this news comes out the day after getting pounded in the ass by the 2-13 Titans sure feels like an omen.

Man, I guess I really don't get this. There's a ton of fans of teams in different states. They're the KC chiefs…not the KC Missouri chiefs. Again the giants and jets play in the meadowlands, and the only gripe I hear is "how far out of the city it is"

Much better than the lame-ass retractable roofs that are hardly ever open, or even if open, it's basically like a car sunroof. Much rather have a translucent roof and as many windows as possible to give it some measure of outside feel.

I think Minnesota's does a great job of it where it blocks the direct sun but a noon game otherwise looks like it's practically outside. Now they just gotta figure out how to get grass to grow in them.
