My wife has been looking at the Frame TV to replace the one in our living room. It sits in a built-in cabinet, so we'd be using it with the stand and not mounted on the wall. She primarily wants the art mode function with the matte screen to not have a giant black box in the living room most of the time.

Shes a first responder and is able to get a decent discount, I believe she can get the Frame TV 65" with the bezel for 1200. I feel like the expense of the tv is mostly due to the thin nature, but I am a dum-dum when it comes to tvs. Do other Samsung TV's offer the art mode function? Since we arent mounting on a wall, I feel like we can get a better quality tv for the same price or better yet a similar quality and function tv for a lower price.

We dont really live near an electronics store where I could go sample a few easily (other than Walmart) which is why Im here asking the experts.

I haven't seen anything in the market that looks as good in art mode but I haven't looked in a few years.

I mean it's what Samsung made the TV for. Can you do screensavers for others? Yes. Well, as long as it isn't a TV that will get image burn in (like on OLED). I do think, just from seeing them in stores, the art mode picture looks better on the Samsung Frame than others.

It's also meant to more easily add an actual frame to the TV. Yes, you can still retrofit others. But again, it's what this TV was designed for so it's easier.

That being said, would it actually look good in the situation you're describing? When I think of the Frame TV, I think of a spot where the TV is mounted flush against the wall. So when it's in art mode a picture looks somewhat normal there. A picture would just look out of place on a stand in your entertainment center, no?

My wife loves these TV's. But this is precisely the reason we don't have one. We have an entertainment center and think it'd look really goofy to have a picture just framed inside it.

Gonna agree with the poster above. We have one and love it but it's mounted straight to the wall. I dont think we'd have got it if we had a built in entertainment center kind of setup.

That being said, it's a nice tv and happy wife, happy life. I paid i think like $500 more for our 65" frame. $1200 for it is a great price.

I used the online assistant (live person) to help me build one out and they gave me the snap on frame for the tv and installation for free.

We've been very happy with ours. It's mounted over the fireplace so it was important to us that this focal point wasn't a normal TV. I'd say go for it. It does make a nice difference looking at artwork versus a big ole TV.

I agree with you. We have one in one of the old "built ins" and it doesn't quite utilize what the Frame was designed to do.

That said, we love the TV and features and the fact that it isn't susceptible to burn-in.

FYI - Art Mode is much more realistic in very well lit rooms/daylight.

Would you mind sharing what a 65" model would run you? Her discount reduced this week. We can still get it for less than 1500, but not as sweet as it looked last week (when it also included a free bezel).

From my perspective, the two primary benefits of the Frame is how it hangs on the wall and the art work. I am an OLED guy and I have not been able to get a tv mount that makes any regular tv look like a Frame. The Frame looks just like a framed work of art. A normal tv with a great mount looks like a tv really close to the wall. It's the same deal on both tv's with the art. On the Frame the art is very impressive. They have free art that looks good enough but the really cool things are on subscription. Is it worth the subscription? For me it is yes and no. I notice that sometimes I will pay it. And then a credit card expires and I won't renew it. Then I get tired of the free art and then I sign up again.

The problem with the art on the non-Frame tv's that I have seen is that the art is rotated or it has the time on the screen or it has "Samsung" or "Sony" somewhere in the picture. So it really does not look like art, it is just really cool pictures of scenery and it's not a black hole on your wall. The Frame is just next level and it is close to an OLED relative to viewing quality. But if you are not hanging it on the wall you are not using one of the two things for which you are paying a premium. So you are not using 50% of the benefits of a premium priced tv and you are not getting an OLED.

With the Frame you are paying a premium for a pretty good LED tv that looks like art on the wall. It the right place it is worth it. One thing I am not sure about - if you put it in the bedroom you will have the glow of the art on the tv at night. It has a motion activator that turns the screen off when there is no movement. But it seems like it would be bad for it to be lighting up in the middle of the night if you get out of bed. In a regular room it is surprisingly like artwork, with the brightness adjusting seamlessly and unnoticeably. It looks 90% like a painting. That is great in a living room but it would be good to check on how it works in a bedroom if you plan to use one there.

I use OLED as the primary tv for movies or sports. You just cannot beat the picture. But for a secondary tv that will eliminate the look of having too many tv's in an area, the Frame is great. I also think that a Frame in an entertainment center, an area made for a tv, might look a little off. This thing is really made to go on a wall.

I hope these perspectives help you make the right choice for you!

I think it's made for a group of people that finds the presence of a television to be garish and wants to hide it's presence. It's a nice solution for that limited purpose, but I personally think it's a gimmick. As a television itself, I think it's fairly marginal in terms of performance compared to what you pay. I have also never seen one that accomplishes the task well of "blending in" because it's not surrounded by other art. To pull it off, I think you would need to do something like this

If you're just hanging it on the wall by itself, it's still going to look like a TV. It'll just look like a TV with a mat screen a bad viewing angles when it's actually on.

Personally, I'd rather have better television that is also slim profile and QLED. Spend a little money to get a custom frame made at a framing store, and then put that on the wall and let it run.

Every time someone asks me "is that a picture frame or a tv" it makes me smile. Love ours. But like others said I wanted something to mount on the wall with no wires that legit looks like art.

I don't know. We don't have one because, as I said above, we have a built in entertainment center so dont think we'd get the benefit. But based on the couple I've seen at friends houses, and the responses on this thread, I'd have to say I disagree with your post

The two I've seen in person were the sole piece of "art" above the fireplace and they blended in great. Way better than I expected honestly

I see a few mentions of not great viewing angles. Can anyone elaborate? I'm thinking of putting one above a fireplace in a large living room, primary uses would be watching football on Saturdays and movie nights. If it's high up on a wall, will folks looking up from the floor or couch or watching from the side of the room have trouble making out the image?

And do the poor viewing angle issues apply to art mode as well?
Thanks and gig'em

Yes, it will apply to art mode as well. It has to do with the angle you are viewing the screen at - regardless of the content you are watching. You will still be able to watch the games/TV/art without issue. It just won't be as pretty of a picture. The picture color gets more dull and not as sharp but the picture is still viewable - just not at the same quality.

If video quality is really important to you, then it will bother you. If you don't mind sacrificing the best image for tv placement, you will likely be fine. It is pretty subjective IMO.

The Frame shuts off at night when dark. Getting up in the middle of the night does not turn it back on. When there is a certain level of morning light again the art comes back on.

Just FYI -- We have the 65", there is a subscription for the art........Just FYI, did not know that when I picked this TV.

I thought I read there was some free art, an optional subscription for more art, and then you could also upload your own images for free.

Is this inaccurate?

The art provided is VERY limited. Only 2 or 3 images. You can buy art, one at a time for roughly $20 each, or annual subscription is $50. Not sure about the upload option.

Is this something on the new ones? My older Frame has prob 20-30 free images in the art store.

Yes. I even had someone look at it and say they liked the art. I had to tell him it was a Frame and he did a double take.

FWIW, I've got two frames and I'm happy we did both. I made a couple of wooden frames to match the rooms they are in and I think it dresses them up nicely. Our house isn't styled modern enough for the Samsung frames that you can buy. If you know what you're looking for, they are easy to spot, but otherwise, I think they blend in really well and people are often surprised that they are TVs. I think the weakness is that the lighting settings are easy to set for one time of day, but don't adjust perfectly for all times of day (depending on the mix and direction of natural light vs home lighting.

I was planning on moving the 65" into another room and getting the 75" to appease the wife

A bigger TV will fit in this space….but a 75" piece of art might look a little strange. Plus the 75" decorative frames are double the price.

I have a frame and it's great, same comments as above.

My has been randomly turning on and sets to Samsung tv by itself. Which has gotten rather annoying.

I enjoy mine and recommend but it really depends what you want to get out of it that makes it worth it. The art mode is cool but honestly feels like a gimmick. The TV will auto time out and go black after 4 hours or so, so unless you use it fairly often it will be a black screen a lot of the time. The art does look pretty good and I uploaded some of my own that looks great as well. You can get high quality scans of famous art for free at the link below and use that instead of paying for Samsung's art.

That said the real reason to get this tv is if you want a TV that is flush with the wall. If you don't have the space for a mount or want your tv sticking out at all this is the reason to buy this tv. All the HDMI inputs and power converter is in the hub that connects to the tv to a single wire. You don't ever need to access the back of the tv with the frame as you would most other TV's. Mine is on a wall in front of my treadmill and I just didn't have the room for a full mount and set up and the Frame is perfect for what I was looking for.

https://www.nga.gov/open-access-images.html

You'll also want to crop / edit the images so the background is the right size of the tv. For the 32 inch i have it's 3840 x 2160 pixels. I use a black background of that size and then place the art in the center so it doesn't skew it or crop it weird.
