Just curious to see what folks on the board love the most.

Me? Probably GameCube.

PS2 by far. Such an expansion on gaming's ability using a full DVD disc + BC with PS1 + dvd player + huge game library + super low power consumption so you could easily run it on a power inverter for car rides. Cant tell you how many hours on family road trips me and my buddy spent gaming on one + a 10" CRT sitting on the floor of the suburban.

I still have my phat PS2 sitting in my office on a shelf + my entire game catalog.

For me it is easily the Switch. The combination of portability and dockability with some of the best IP ever made is hard to beat. Throw the virtual console functionality that allows me to play the games from my childhood in the mix and it's a no brainer. I'd like to see Gameboy Pokemon games like Red/Blue added to the Online library, but that is not THAT big of a deal. I'm not a huge FPS gamer, so lack of COD and the like isn't an issue for me.

I've typically preferred PC gaming over console gaming, aside from when I was a kid. Not my favorite console, but probably the biggest wow factor for me was the first time I played Mario 64 on the N64. That was the first N64 game I had played and seeing the jump it made from the SNES and Sega was insane to me at the time.

I think the Switch is the most innovative. With that being said, I prefer the Steam Deck over the Switch (I own both) because I can continue to play my PC library, even if they aren't Steam games (easy to install).

Edit to say I have owned an Atari, NES, SNES, Sega (with CD and 32X), TG16, N64, XBOX, XBOX 360, Wii, PS3, PS4, and Switch.

The real question: Are the Sega CD and 32X considered their own consoles or are they just Genesis add-ons?

I would say an earlier console but my PS4 has been running almost non-stop for 10 years. So…PS4…

I had an Intellivision and Super Nintendo.

Own both and I'd say an expansion that creates a subplatform. They can't be their own console because they won't function without a Genesis. The Sega CD is more of a lateral in terms of gameplay, at least the way it was utilized anyway. Games on the 32X are more noticeably improved at least with regard to visuals. They had some great arcade ports. It really came out at a terrible time for it to get any real level of developer support because the Saturn was obviously Sega's plan to move forward.

Favorite console is tough for me to pick.

The PS3 gets a nod because it was the only blu ray player that actually got meaningful software updates and continued to play newer discs as they came out...
NES for the number of hours I sat in front of the thing, and the growth of the platform as developers learned to get more out of it...
GameCube for Double Dash and the special Zelda disc...

But the winner is the PS2 because of the insane jump in quality from the PS1. No more low-res jagged polygons, a solid game library, and simple to mod if you wanted to play 'backups' with a boot disc + flip top lid. Or now just get a LAN card and load games straight from a networked PC.

N64 is the correct answer. Why are we still talking about this?

I think mine was the Xbox 360. That's when online console gaming really took off and I was at the perfect age to enjoy it (mid 20's and we had babies so we didn't get out much during those years).

A close 2nd would be the SNES. So many great games on that console and thanks to the local mom & pop video stores I rented and played a lot of them!

Sega was all over the place back then. Trying to go in several different directions at once.

Sony and Nintendo didn't kill Sega. Sega killed Sega.

And I will say that a big reason I take the Switch over the N64 is because many of my favorite N64 games are playable on Switch Online. (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, GoldenEye)

N64 is probably the best lineup of first party games ever.

I've spent far more time in my life on a PC than anything else but as far as consoles go, PS2 probably has the biggest quantity of "all-time great games" for me of any console and it had a massive library of AA games that provided a lot of variety.

I love the 360... but I hate the 360 because I've been burned by the RROD too many times. My Slim hasn't failed but there was too much trouble from the ones I dealt with before that.

I bought a replacement plan from Best Buy for my 360 after hearing some people talk about the RROD. It was one of the best purchases I've made. I had it replaced 4 times and each time I would purchase a new replacement plan and walk out with a gift card because the price of the 360 fell over time.

That was a mess but the 360 was such a great console. Felt like everyone I knew had one.

That one and the Wii, definitely seemed like everybody had one.

The frequency that it died was too much. Hey let's play some Katamaaaa what the f*k... And the fixes that were supposed to totally address the actual problems never did. Even on a 2009 refurb with the new GPU, that one RROD'd just after a year of MS sending it over with only light use. That was the en of the fat line or me.

I'd actually like a second one to plug into a CRT in the en and would be ok with a fat one, but as unreliable as they are it'd better be just dirt cheap.

Maybe it is nostalgia but my favorite is the GameBoy Advance.

Second would be Dreamcast because of NFL2K. The jump in gameplay was huge compared to other football games on other systems

XBox 360 for me. Between Halo 2, Modern Warfare, and Skyrim, the vast majority of my console gaming time was spent on it.

I still have both my 360 and PS2 and play them occasionally, although the bulk of my gaming is now on PC.

Owned NES, SNES, Genesis, XBox, XBox 360, XBox X, PS One, PS2, Wii, Wii U, Game Boy, Game Gear, & Switch. I'd still say PC is the best but for just a console it's gotta be the SNES. The leap between SNES and what came before was just huge. Comfort, graphics, music, the IP that was released on that thing were amazing. You go through the list of games that were out on that thing... and hell it had the first real online gaming setup (Japan only). It was truly revolutionary.

That said it's hard for a lot of people to relate to a 30 year old system. Still PC is better and with Steam Deck I have a whole new appreciation for it. I honestly think that the SD and all of it's rapidly releasing competitors will radically change consoles over the next 2 decades. I wouldn't be surprised to see Valve or others successfully release a new set top and it actually work this time.

Are PC games these days actually coming with decent default controller mapping for the steamdeck? I have some of the steam link units, but I never got much use out of them when they came out. It was a royal PITA to try to get controllers mapped correctly for the games. Only some games would work with them.
BadMoonRisin

Yeah the more recent the better. Anything "steam verified" on steam will have button mapping.

Anything "deck compatible" might have a thing or to wrong, like having to use the touch screen to enter text, but still works great.

aezmvp helped me decide to get a deck and I do have to agree with them, it's a gamechanger. As will be the competitors. Especially when AMD and NVIDIA target that completely new category.
