A buddy of mine is building a house, asking for a recommendation for a front-firing subwoofer. It's going in the rear of an odd-shaped living - will have a 5.1 set up with other in-ceiling speakers for a different zone.

I don't think he wants to spend thousands, but wants a quality product.

Any suggestions for brands, etc. would be appreciated.

Rythmik (HQ and warehouse is in Austin FYI) or SVS. Can't go wrong with either. What are the main LCR speakers? Bookshelf or floor standing? I generally like a 15" for home theater use but a 10" or 12" for music is generally preferred (although any subwoofer will work for any purpose to some extent).

I'm on year 17 with a SVS sub and it's still going strong. I've heard good things about Rythmik also.

I've got a Rythmik FV15HP and an E15HP2 - they are both great. Also just got an SVS Micro 3000 for a smaller setup I haven't even setup yet (waiting for some special balanced->unbalanced cables to arrive). And I'll be getting a Rythmik F12 soon as well for my desk setup. You can say I like bass...

Benn running a dual 12" M&K MX350-THX for 24 years, and the only things i've had to do is replace the speaker surrounds once myself about 5 years ago as well as replace the pot on the volume knob with a $5 replacement part. Thing has been abused regularly and has never been plugged into anything other direct wall outlet with no conditioner or surge suppressor. Still thumps like it did in college... im sure there are old ones available used that should provide a long life at low cost.

Funny you mention that. I'm still rocking some M&K 150s from back then in my movie room.

I have a theater room with two M&K 350thx subs and S-150s in 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup. M&K speakers are simply the best out there.

Yup. I saved up my money from working at the reed arena box office and plunked it down on a floor model Mx350 from the college station Audio/Video in 1998 and have been using it ever since. Thing is an absolute beast.
