Son is looking for a new laptop. This is for mostly graphics desing/AutoCAD type work. Not for gaming. He plans to connect it to a 27" external 4K monitor.

He's sent me a few he's looking at but one of them only has an HDMI 1.4 port, which is a max output of 1080p. The Acer Apsire has an HDMI 2.1 port but I can't tell if the integrated graphics card will support a higher resolution.

The one is a AMD Ryzen 5 7520U and the integrated graphics card is spec'd as AMD Radeon 610M.

I've look at a bunch of websites, but can't seem to find what the max resolution that laptop will support for an external monitor. 1080p for AutoCAD will look terrible.

Anyone know where to find the specs. Neither AMD's or ACER's website were helpful.

EDIT: after reading the costco reviews, maybe that one is not a good choice. But question still stands on external monitor resolution.

I haven't done any tests or research but I would think any laptop without a dedicated GPU is not going to drive a 4K monitor very well.

I guess I got that wrong, it's 2560 x 1440 which I guess is Quad HD. I have an Intel Xe integrated graphics card on my work PC and it drives my 2 xQuad HD monitors just fine at 60hz

AutoCAD is going to drive the processor more than graphics.

D'Oh,,,they all have USB-C ports that will support the higher resolution monitors. Just not clear how high the integrated graphics will go.

As long as you don't need to push the refresh rate very high you should be fine in MOST cases.

I do graphic intensive stuff like stock trading. I went gaming rig specifically to run graphics to a 65" Samsung TV.
