I have a 12 year old and a 10 year old who currently share an Xbox 1. They play together a lot, but also like to play online with their friends. I like to trade Xbox time for time outside…usually 2:1 outside:Xbox.

I'm thinking of getting smoother console so they can both play with their friends at the same time instead of waiting on one another…this actually means more time playing outside

What's better, 2 Xbox or 1 Xbox and 1 PlayStation?

Can I xbox live account work on 2 consoles at the same time?

I'm thinking I need another Xbox to avoid buying separate games? But am willing to if there is value.

Thanks for help,
Brian Earl Spilner

I'd go for a Switch for the 10 year old.

You should always buy the console your friends have, so you can play with them. The only reason to deviate is if there are certain exclusives you have to play.

Anybody know if you can have Xbox live on two consoles at the same time?

You can defintely have 2 Xbox's in one house and they can share games and Xbox live / gamepass.

It's a little complicated and I don't have the time to explain it all right now, but I'm sure there are YouTube videos that will walk you through it.

This is 100% the route to go so they can play games together and with their friends at the same time.

The account with the live and games, you set its home Xbox so any account on that Xbox can get live and share the games with the owner account signed out. Then sign in to that account on another Xbox and play the games with that account as long as there's an internet connection on the second Xbox.

You can't go to 3 or more Xboxes though.

Seems easy enough.

Can they play each other or as a team with friends?

Yes, it is easy enough, but some of it is very counter intuitive... I would recommend finding a detailed guide or YouTube video that will walk you through it.

But yes, your boys will be able to play together and with friends at the same time. They will both need their own accounts and you will need to buy digital copies of the games so they can be shared with the "home console" method. Physical disc copies can only be played on 1 console at a time.

And I would personally recommend (from experience) when you set up emails for their accounts, make them 18... the kid restrictions are super annoying and will lock them out of a ton of stuff, most of which is harmless.

If you find a video walk-through but still have questions let us know.

Last question. We have an Xbox 1S is there a recommendation for which current console to buy? Will the Xbox X be compatible with most everything we already have?

Yes, the Xbox Series X will be compatible with everything you bought for the Xbox One S.

Things to note with this generation…

-Like the Xbox One, you can use external hard drives to store games.

-New games or updated existing games that are labeled Xbox Series X|S optimized require to be run on the Series X internal SSD. You'll get 1TB which is great! But you can't run them on an external hard disk drive although you can store them to transfer later. Just keep that in mind if you loaded up your One with a ton of games over time. You'll have to pick which games you're currently playing to store on the Series X SSD till it's time to move on to another game and free up some storage. Xbox One games will still run off an external drive if they're not Series X optimized.

-If you want to fit more games on the SSD, then you have buy and expansion card which are expensive! But if you're patient like I am and just switch out games on the SSD every couple of months, it's not bad without the expansion. For a long time the sole company that provided expansion cards was Seagate, but Western Digital finally was allowed to make drives and the prices have gone down, but still expensive compared to PC or PlayStation 5.

The Series S is a great console for younger kids given the cost difference. We have 2 Xboxes in our house and my 13 year old loves the S. Of course, I have a Series X because I want the top of the line. But I play on a 65" OLED and my son plays on a 27" monitor so the S is more than adequate for that smaller & lower res screen.

The correct answer to this is to get whatever their friends play. Gaming works on everything. It matters who you're playing with.
