So I'm figuring out where to mount the "dish" I just rec'd. I wanted to mount it under the eave so ordered the $75 "long arm" piece. The only extended arm Starlink sells is not very long at all and won't clear the overhang. I can build it out with blocking etc but really don't want to do that. I'm googled out and haven't found much about my application.

Question: Can I mount the thing on the side of the 2 story house, using the long arm which will kick it out a ways? There are no obstructions whatsoever as we are in the country with no trees on that WNW facing wall, BUT it will only "see" half of the sky, if that makes sense. I haven't used the app yet to see how good the signal is. Being old and tech-challenged isn't helping.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I don't think you know me.

I've installed Starlink at two locations. Depending on the install height, my recommendation is to rent a lift and use the app before committing to a location. The dish needs a fairly wide view of the sky, and the further north you go, the more vertical (above the horizon) that view becomes.

You might look at some third-party mounts.

Pro-tip: If you need to drill a hole into the house using the supplied spade bit, feed the included cable through the hole from the inside of the house first. The end of the cable that plugs into the router will not fit through this hole. I made the mistake of starting at the dish and then fastening the cable as I worked my way down the house. I drilled the hole and then realized the router end of the cable wouldn't fit through it.

Just to echo above, it does need almost a full view of the entire sky. Not just north. If you can't get above a roof line, you are going to be limiting yourself pretty bad.

Edit to add, pictures might help others understand exactly how much of an obstruction you are going to be experiencing with your potential setup.

The dish looks up in a cone toward the sky. You don't want any obstructions within that cone, including the tops of trees, chimneys, telephone poles, etc. Sometimes you can find the perfect spot even with trees and other stuff nearby, it all depends on how that cone is situated.

So yeah you really need the app before you select a location.

In the 18 months we had starlink - the dish was replaced twice to fix separate issues. So keep in mind you may have to swap hardware

If you want to get a good view of the sky, use this and put it on your roof.

I normally don't condone the screwing of things into roof decking but this is built very well, I've personally installed them, and they are very DIY friendly if you can safely access your roof.

When installed per the directions, it will be a permanent and long term solution. It is not like the dish mounts that some goon crawls up and screws into the shingles and goops sealant on. It's way better.
