So it isn't my computer so this is second hand info. I'm going over to the guy's house this evening to check it out so trying to get some ideas.

So my buddy had 16gb of ram and was having some issues with certain games and decided to upgrade to 32gb.
He changed out the ram and was met with the "New memory has been detected, press F1 for setup" screen. That's where the first issue arose. He has a 1/4 keyboard with the FN keys and couldn't get the F keys to work. So he ran to Walmart and bought a cheap keyboard, F1 worked, and got to his desktop.

Issue 2, mouse input doesn't work. He tried unplugging it and plugin it back in and nothing changed. So he restarted the computer and now he said BIOS comes up. He tried plugging his old ram back in, but the same issue persists.

He is scared to mess with it anymore until I get there. Does this sound like a simple issue or something more?

Sounds like something got unplugged while he was upgrading the ram.

Would like to know some more details, especially processor, mobo, and RAM.

1) Make sure RAM is seated all the way.
2) Make sure they are in the correct slots. Should be slots 2 and 4 if using two sticks.
3) Try with one stick in slot 2 and see if it loads.
4) Check BIOS settings, turn off XMP

Good thought above on the "something getting unplugged." Make sure all the power and USB connectors are connected firmly to the mobo.

Also, if he's got a prebuilt system from a big corp like HP, Dell, Alienware, etc. they tend to have proprietary RAM which sucks but you probably wouldn't be able to plug in a new regular RAM stick to begin with.

Thanks for the replies. Believe his is a fully custom PC by the looks of it. I'll try to troubleshoot with yalls suggestions. May take my extra mobo as well.

Additionally check the RAM speed and specs as well.

Finally, check the Motherboard spec page on the manufacturer site to insure the RAM is compatible with his Mobo.

Most Mobos will have a spreadsheet or tool on their website to tell you what RAM has been tested with the board.

I recommend staying on the list as it has been tested for compatibility.

I bought 32 GB of RAM a few months ago to upgrade my main workstation, a Dell, in order to run virtual machines more efficiently.

It wouldn't run. I had to switch back to the previous memory.

I moved it to a Lenovo machine and it works fine there but the computer has developed other issues such as refusing to boot some systems from the hard drive. It will boot OpenBSD and SuSE Linux, but not Red Hat. It will boot older versions of Ubuntu, but not the latest versions. I don't know if that is the RAM or something else. Fortunately, I can start the boot from a CD and then load the OS from the hard drive.

It appears that the issue on my Dell workstation was that the RAM I bought was not built to the standards Dell expects. Instead of Crucial RAM, I bought RAM from a company called Gigastone. From what I can tell, it looks like they sell rebranded Samsung memory.

Just the other day, I finally ordered some RAM made by Crucial from Amazon. I'll know next week how it works.

As for the mouse, is it a wireless mouse? I have seen wireless mice quit working when the battery ran down.

So update since I'm here. The issue is it boots fine, but the OS freezes about 5 minutes into the boot. I've tried force booting from bios and changing to XMP Profile 1 for 3200hz ram and it's still freezing.

The ram is listed on the compatible list.

Tried reseating and made sure everything is plugged in. Feels like there's an easy bios setting I'm missing.

Have you run a full memory test on the RAM? Such a test may take a half hour or maybe even more.

So I posted a little premature that last time. After restart it seems the changing the XMP to profile 1 worked.

Doesn't really make sense to me since the old ram wouldn't work either.
