How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm going in a trip in April and will be taking lots of pictures. I would prefer a dedicated small p&s camera instead of using my phone constantly to take pictures. Can anyone recommend a nice small point a shoot camera that doesn't break the bank? As in, a few hundred dollars or so .. thanks

Also, water resistant would be nice. Not submersible , but able to withstand a little rain etc

Unfortunately the market doesn't exist anymore. With everyone using their phones, point and shoot cameras are hardly produced anymore. I ended up getting a Sony RX-100 last year, but it was $1k and a model first produced like 5 years ago.

My research confirms your assessment! Thank you for the reply. I thought I would be nice to keep my phone put away safely since we will be through some wet, rocky terrain

Put your phone in a ziplock baggie to keep it dry.

I have 3 cool trips planned over the next year. So I thought it might be worth getting a dedicated camera. I'll look into the above !

It is untrue that the P&S market doesn't exist anymore. For stills, it darn sure does exist. Now, they aren't making as many cameras and they aren't updating them as often, so video features on the cameras aren't keeping up, but the photo features are still pretty good. The Panasonic LX10 is a good example. Great fast lens, and pretty decent in low light. Manual features if you want those. Obviously, it lacks what an SLR would have, but its the next best thing. At least decent to good video. I don't think even the most recent iPhones are all that much better.

I would advise not to buy on MPB. They sent me the wrong version of an item (original model instead of II -- they advertised it wrong on their site) and refused to pay for return shipping. I had to go through my CC company and they hassled that.

The market does exist, but the cameras that are available are much bigger and more expensive than P&S of yore. Even the Lx10 is $600.

Sony guy here who used to shoot Canon. KEH has this one which I can vouch for. Will shoot RAW files also if you should choose to get deeper into post-processing. There are some nice ones out there but they are a bit pricey at this point. I had a Sony RX10v4 that was great but I believe even used they are >1K.

Thanks for the info. I'm a real amateur here so what's RAW?

Yea, it's either buy second hand P&S with a reputable brand name or buy some cheap Chinese ones for $25.

Simple answer is a file format that holds more data than a jpeg.

BTW, the P series Nikons are also good.

After reading this thread, I am considering getting the Sony ZV-1 as a back-up to my Canon R7 and especially for video. When I went to Utah, my dSLR completely croaked and all I had was a cel phone. :-( That was so sad.

What does this f-stop mean on these compact digital cameras? I have never understood the little numbers.

Example: ZEISS 24-70mm-Equiv. f/1.8-2.8 Lens

I have an older version of this Canon. It's been perfect for situations just like you're describing. Better zoom, battery, and storage than a phone. Plus my kids love taking pics with it.

Took this one at Yellowstone with our little Canon

That Yellowstone pic is beautiful, but I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison with an IPhone 13 or higher.

I expect the iPhone would be better. This is 15 year old camera but still 14 MP and takes nice pics. Plus I wouldn't care much if my kids broke it. It fits a pretty narrow purpose.

That's my thing, I want something that I can drop on a rock or in a creek that isn't my phone .
