Anyone else encountered this? I mean, it works on the old version, but not the new version? HTF is this possible to miss as a function?

Dragging and dropping messages and attachments is currently not supported in New Outlook for Windows, and this work is in progress and will be available in the future. As a workaround, you can switch back to the classic Outlook at any time by clicking the toggle button in the top right corner of the window.

Many features of our current products are designed and upgraded based on customers' feedback. With requirements like this increase, the problem may well be released in the future. someone has already submitted this feedback, you can vote for him through this link, if you have any feedback or additional suggestions for improvements, please post the functions you expect and your sincere suggestions.
As of the most recent post on that link (Feb 6, 2024) it is still not available. This is akin to iOS not allowing you to attach files to emails early on (had to open the file then "share" it - which sucked if you wanted to email multiple files)

Just more proof that software developers at large corps are completely out of touch with reality. Apple does this crap too in iOS (Moving setting to the least obvious places, removing the magnifying glass to zoom/move around text).

Function of them moving away from local installs to the cloud. All of their cloud version of apps are missing some level of functionality compared to their local versions. I'm guessing they are taking this opportunity to pare everything down and just build the most used features to lessen support.

I personally never really used drag and drop features and really only ever used Insert commands. Not sure why. Just never got in the habit. I totally get the complaint though.

MS is just ruining Windows entirely, with no rhyme or reason. (same as they have done with Xbox, the Surface Line, etc).

Instead of making a better Windows 10, they are removing way more functionality than adding, and creating a much worse O/S.

I switched to Mac a year ago in part because Windows 10/11 just weren't good. I've actually found Excel which I use a lot to be more stable in Mac than in Windows. In Windows it would freeze weekly or more while in Mac it never freezes. I miss some of the Excel 2003 keyboard shortcuts that aren't in Mac but it's a much better user experience.

Edit: I clicked the link and realized it's about dragging attachments from emails to folders, not vice versa.

Yeah, slightly annoying, and dumb, but I really don't download items from emails much anymore so hasn't been too big a deal for me.

I just don't get how having a function that works fine suddenly doesn't work anymore with a new version.

WHY WOULD YOU DELETE THAT?

Operating systems are moving towards an immutable design. Linux has been implementing things like flatpak and appimage for quite a while, other distros like QEMU are using VMs for everything.

Apple has started working on this as well, though they're not very far along, and MS has been converging their various platforms into a single core, and they'll start moving towards an atomic desktop environment as well.

10 years ago or so Apple tried to move to full convergence between mobile and laptop and had to abandon ship, MS was more successful at doing it. The latest trend is towards immutability. A lot of features that have been around forever will disappear and be re-implemented with the new architecture. Things like that may not make the first cut.

The way Xbox runs games is actually very inline with what they view an immutable system as, and you'll likely see similar methods rolling out for other MS applications. The host OS is more or less a hypervisor, and every app runs in a VM.

Might as well have been in Chinese.

I just know that to this point new outlook hasn't been a smooth transition.

Honestly didn't follow all of that so if you have a minute translate that to English, please. lol

That aside the comment that MS was more successful than Apple at converging mobile and desktop OS was interesting. Clearly Apple didn't succeed at it since their App Store has a clear delineation between what will work in Mac and what will work in iOS. But I've been under the impression MS abandoned their mobile OS entirely and their latest attempt to enter the mobile space was with an Android based OS. I have thought MS failed entirely so I'm curious what you know that I don't which, judging by my first request in this post is a lot!

Thanks!
