Have a 10 year old Windows 10 pro. RAM 4 GB. Intel processor 2.99GHz.
This PC is VERY slow to start up. Never every time you click on an icon the blue cycling image (that it's working) stays on a long time.

CCleaner.com has a highly rated free download I'm thinking about trying. All suggestions are appreciated.

Unfortunately age is likely your biggest problem. Programs/apps require more resources than your machine is capable of. CCleaner in my experience loads more baggage than it removes.

You really need a new computer but if not in the budget, upgrade the ram to 8 or 16Gb and replace the hard drive with a SSD. Post make and model and I will post links.

Disable unused apps in Startup apps, uninstall unused apps. Backup your data to the cloud or USB flash drive/portable HD if you aren't already.

BMo & Tailgate88 are correct, the age is a big factor. And at 10 years your PCs boot drive might be mechanical. With a new PC you'll be moving to an SSD drive and the boot times are much faster.

Yep, unfortunately age is the problem. A $300-$400 ryzen prebuilt mini pc from Beelink or similar would run circles around that old pc.

I wouldn't waste time with cccleaner type products. As stated above a new sub $500 PC will be significantly better in every way. If budget is an issue or you just want to try something first, you can try a fresh install of Windows. It's painful and the update process is awful, but you might have something useable after it finally completes.

It's been awhile. I like the idea of a 16GB or even 32GB. I'm not a gamer. I take it processor speed isn't that important. I run a very small business. I'm wondering how much storage I need. 500GB should be enough right?
Lastly, there's the software. Adobe for PDFs? What's the best way to get the entire Microsoft suite of word, excell, powerpoint, etc. I don't like the one drive. Should I buy 360 or do you just lease it for so many years?

Please right-click on the icon in the lower left hand corner of your screen and choose "System" from the menu that appears. Cut and paste the info that is under "Device Specifications and "Windows specifications".

Specificallly, Processor, Installed Ram, and Windows Edition.

Then, right-click again on that icon and choose "File Explorer". Click "This PC" in the left pane and then tell us what it says on the C: drive, e.g. "150 GB Free of 465GB" or similar.

With that info we can better advise you.

  • Processor does make a difference but you dont need a high end 3D cache gaming CPU for example
  • 16GB ram is plenty for everyday work
  • Drive space is dirt cheap, a 1tb SSD can be found for $50 if you ever run out
  • Adobe is fine for PDF
  • for Microsoft suite, i always buy a student edition off ebay so i get the full suite permanently. Its usually a few years behind like 2019 or something but works perfectly and attached to my Microsoft account without issue

@BartinLA I have two Intel NUC8 mini PCs available if you're interested shoot me an email. More info on my Classifieds post: https://texags.com/forums/50/topics/3428020

Fatzilla has a great idea on buying the previous version of Office to save. Otherwise it's $70/year for 1 personal license https://www.microsoft.com/en-wf/microsoft-365/p/microsoft-365-personal/cfq7ttc0k5bf

I wouldn't invest any more money into that configuration when you could for not much more get a new computer. The processor isn't even an i3 (or i5 / i7) - it's the previous Core 2 Duo line.

I appreciate all the help. I'm rebooting my business and have been going down lots of rabbit holes. It's been a learning experience but I just concluded my PC needs to be replaced but I have higher priorities as I use my laptop 99% of the time.

No worries. I have added RAM and an SSD to dozens of computers and it can really bring an old computer back to a decent speed in most cases, but I also try to be honest when it just time for an upgrade - which is definitely the case here.

Maybe just get an external monitor and a wireless keyboard/mouse for your laptop and use it?

There are quite a few ways to repurpose it as well, although I'm guessing if that's been in service as a desktop the needs for NAS or other server solutions are probably pretty small. It's a more than capable machine for many Linux applications though.
