Anyone certified for sUAS through the FAA for commercial drone operation? Looking at this as a side gig and was looking for tips and pointers. Any thoughts on this test?

I took it in 2019 so it might have changed since then. There's also probably more resources now than 5 years ago. Test was definitely not easy, they definitely try and weed people out. I took a course from Drone Launch Academy and would recommend it. You definitely want to take some type of online course before taking the test. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I bought a cheap course on Udemy

4hr FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test Prep for Drone Pilots

It's a decent course. I feel like it hits the high points of what you need to know without too much useless info. I've run through the course a couple of times, but i still haven't taken the exam because the nearest testing center is 90 miles away. I really need to get it done soon...

Like k20 said, it's definitely not easy. Don't think you can just go in there an pass the test on common sense. It's going to take some preparation.

That Drone Launch Academy course looks great, but $199 is a little steep... Maybe i could get my employer to pay for it.

My company bought me this course. Went through the courses, took the practice test, and passed the Part 107 test in under a week start to finish.

They get feedback from people who take the test and constantly update their training guide and basically tells you almost every question that will be on the test.

I no longer fly, but have had 107 since 2017 I believe. I'll still keep renewing it since that process is easier than before. Our company started by just putting all the information we could find online in a big binder.

Someone later bought an online course that was pretty cheap back in the day. We didn't realize that was single license at the time and just shared that login and put probably 20+ pilots through that course to get certified over a couple year period. They eventually caught on and suspended it. Funny thing is all of their content (PDFs and video files) was downloadable when we had access so we already had it all saved to work on it offline. We continued using that content offline and then sprinkled in some of the new regulations that came out around 2021.

There are so many online courses now, but the prices seem to be higher. Youtube is also a great source for training content. I also recommend searching jrupprechtlaw.com. That site has good content on Part 107 and does a good job explaining things.

Find as many practices tests as you can and study until you're passing those with ease. It also helps to find those that explain the correct answer and why all the other choices were wrong. Focus on airspace and charts and you have a good chance.

I passed back in Jan.

Company paid for my course through:
https://www.dronepilotgroundschool.com

Lifetime account so as laws change you just have to log back in and get up to date.

Spent about 20 hrs studying (at work), test was easy.

I passed it in 2022 after an online course. Wanted to do some side gigs as well. Signed up for all of the online/broker type sites that send you notices of jobs within your specified radius, but they were all so low priced it would cost more in gas/time for me to head out. There are a bunch of people trying this and many will take the low paying gigs (this is in DFW, YMMV depending on location). A lot of people in DFW also that do this full-time, and they get most of the bigger gigs.
I let my license lapse and just fly for fun now.

You can buy a cheat sheet from Amazon and use Professor Messer on YouTube, plus a few other channels that post questions and answer walkthroughs. Pretty much gets you everything you need. The questions aren't hard and there are only three answers to choose from instead of four. There are usually two easily-discerned bad answers that can be removed with a little bit of logic. Be sure to brush up on your weather skills, and learn how to read terminal aerodrome forecasts.

Thinking about going down this route. Possibly moving to a career that drone work will be a skill needed.

Have only flown earlier quadcopters. Don't currently own a drone. For those who have done side gigs, what type of drone did you use?

I'm probably looking at a dji mini 4 or one of the larger affordable dji drones.

Stay away from Chinese drones if you ever want to get a government contract.

I figure if I get to the point of doing something involving govt contracts, I will be employed with a company who will have their drone fleet or I'll have been making enough money to get my own high dollar drones.

Had the Mavic 2 Pro for 3 years then upgraded to the Mavic 3 Pro at the end of last year. Love it. Do not get one where you have to use your phone as part of the remote controller, hated that with the Mavic 2.

Autel EVO 2. No geofencing and cameras can be updated and switched out for thermal pretty easy.
