First time updating the BIOS on my motherboard. I've looked at the manufacturer's (MSI) website for the procedure. Any best practices to know about?

MSI should have the instructions. Each Mobo is very different.

Apparently, my Gigabyte actually has an installer for the BIOS, so I didn't have to install it via a USB drive. It was pretty stupid-proof. I think the last time I helped a buddy through his MSI update, he had to install off of a USB.

Thanks. I've got the MSI instructions, looks like I will be using a USB drive to do the update.

Updating BIOS these days is so much less risky than it used to be with flashback. Just follow the instructions and you should be good.

Some mobos even have a fail-safe where if something does go wrong it can go back to the original.

If you MoBo has a flashback button on it then you should be okay even if things go awry. Most BIOSs now days have a very easy flash tool so like one poster said earlier flashing BIOS is really easy these days

BIOS update went well. Installation of new RAM was no problem. No we'll see how the new CPU (5800x3D) goes in a few weeks.

What are you coming from? make sure to update your AMD chipset drivers when you replace the CPU.

Also don't be surprised if your PC starts does nothing then reboots (tho this is usually when you replace RAM), that's sometimes happens as the MOBO detects hardware changes.

Also I have had Windows sometimes say it has detected a hardware change and may need to reactivate

All that happened with the RAM. With the BIOS it everything came on but the monitor and a couplenof reboots got it up and running again. I updated the AMD chipset last night with the BIOs, but I'll check again before replacing the CPU.

Coming from a Ryzen 5 3600.
My motherboard is an MSI X570-A pro. I saw that DDR4 and and AM4 were getting to be yesterday's hardware so I'm trying to knock out a couple of upgrades while prices are pretty good.

I made the same upgrade awhile ago from the 3600 to 5800x3d and it was amazing.
