Did anyone else play this series back in the day? I loved red alert 1/2 generals etc

Any recommendations on similar style war games?

Absolutely and I bet a lot of us who lurk here in the nerdery did. They remastered the original C&C plus Red Alert back in 2020 and did a great job with it. It's on Steam and currently $1.99. I'd highly recommend it, I dumped over 100 hours into it during Covid and beat all the missions across both games.

There's also a game in development I've got my eyes on that looks almost like a love letter to the C&C series called Tempest Rising. It's set to release in April of 2025, link to the Steam page below for that one.

Loved red alert and there were two expansions of it I played which were a bunch of fun and one of them had this hidden section of 4 or 5 missions where both sides combined (I think they combined) to battle large ants

Haha yeah the ant level is funny. Those expansions are all included in that remastered collection I linked above. It's a ridiculous amount of remastered content for $2.

In college, lugging my massive tower and 20in CRT to someone's apartment for a Red Alert LAN party is a very fond memory. I got the remastered version for my 8 year old a few years ago. He absolutely destroyed me in H2H after a week or so of practice.

My favorite was sneaking a commando into an enemy base where back end air defense was weak and then just wreaking havoc. The commando's taunts were amazing.

Tempest Rising came out a couple weeks ago. I've been enjoying it a lot. It is very much like C&C/Red Alert. Definitely scratches the itch. Very similar gameplay.

In Red Alert, once a team was able to build enough planes to take out the factory, game over.
Although some folks cranked out tanks by building several war factories and then bum rushed the other base. My grades suffered massively during my freshman year thanks to my addiction to Red Alert.

I still play Red Alert 3 online with a buddy every few weeks. It's a fun way to keep in touch.
