At one time, AI was one of the hottest subject areas around. If you had only a basic background in AI and you didn't have a well paying job, you weren't even trying.
Following the boom, companies really cut back. A friend of mine who worked in AI for a company that hired a large number of AI people at one time said that they cut back to only 2 or 3.
I think it is behaving more rationally now. There are jobs, but to get them, you have to be pretty good. Companies now know more about what they want instead of just throwing in a bunch of people to see what happens.
