Got an acquaintance here who got his degree from Cal-Berkley in Artificial Intelligence? I know he's extremely bright, but what in the heck is that major? He lookin for ET? Anyone?

I think it has to do with neural networks and very high level algorithms, a lot of math involved. I think tamu has a similar degree but it is only a masters.

ET would have something to do with outer space and life not on this planet -- artificial intelligence has nothing to do with any of that.

High level math algorithms is what it is -- useful in any kind of robotics or computer field.

That class used to be CPSC320. It's a pretty good class although it's pretty easy. Daugherity made it interesting. Some of the labs were fun and LISP was interesting.

AI (as it is taught here at the NPS Computer Science/MOVES department) covers production systems, machine learning, neural networks, and development of simple and complex software agents. One of the faculty members here even believes he has demonstrated a limited case of congitive blending by a software agent but I'm not qualified to discuss or defend that claim.

The AI work is being applied to factional decision making in political/military wargames based on complex adaptive systems (CAS). The Protean Media project is the main example that is being used now. Some of the predictions for factional behavior in an "Iraq-like" scenario run early this year initially seemed to be off the charts in believability until similar behavior (leadership decisions) was actaully demonstrated in the actual conflict. No one working on the project suggests that AI provides a crystal ball but the insights gained from wargaming with a strong CAS are definitely useful.

At one time, AI was one of the hottest subject areas around. If you had only a basic background in AI and you didn't have a well paying job, you weren't even trying.

Following the boom, companies really cut back. A friend of mine who worked in AI for a company that hired a large number of AI people at one time said that they cut back to only 2 or 3.

I think it is behaving more rationally now. There are jobs, but to get them, you have to be pretty good. Companies now know more about what they want instead of just throwing in a bunch of people to see what happens.

I was thinking about majoring in AI, but decided to go with Ag Journalism instead.

A friend of mine who got his undergraduate (math) at Louisiana Tech and two masters at A&M (math education and computer science) told me about talking to someone about AI in his dorm room at Lousiana Tech in the mid 70s.

While they were talking about AI, his roommate, an animal husbandry major, came in and heard a little of the conversation. He quickly became very upset to find out that the computer science department had AI, but not the animal husbandry department.

He thought it was downright foolish not to have AI under an agriculture related department.
