I'm going to get one of these for my kid. I'm not a gamer (aside from the summer of 1982, never really cared), but my kid really enjoys playing. I have a 3 and a 4 in my house. The kid currently uses the 4, but I have been thinking about hooking that one to my 4K TV so I could play 4K movies on it.

So if I'm looking at one listed as "Sony Playstation 5 Slim Disc EditionPS5 1TB" and another listed as "Sony PlayStation 5 Slim Console PS5 1TB - 4K Blu-ray Player" - is there a difference in these units? I've seen several listings for a "digital" console, which I've interpreted to mean that all activity is via streaming/downloads and does not allow for use of a disc. That's not going to work.

Oh, and will PS4 discs work in the PS5?

I'm pretty sure the versions you quoted are actually the same device but maybe listed differently depending on the website/seller. As far as I'm aware, all disc edition PS5's also play blu-rays in 4k.

You're also right about the "Digital" editionit does not have a disc drive, so it only works with games and media that are downloaded or streamed. The disc versions are a bit louder (from the drive) and a bit bigger.

As for your last question PS4 discs will work in the PS5 (Disc Edition), won't work though with digital edition. The PS5 is backward compatible with a ton of PS4 games. https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/games/ps5-backward-compatibility-games/

Buy now! Microsoft just raised their prices. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony follows suit.

4k blu ray looks awesome. I love top gun Maverick. Worth getting something just to try it out.

Yes, that movie is fantastic in 4K. And it sounds great on the surround system with Dolby Atmos!

Follow up question after finally giving my kid the PS5. She has been using our PS4 for a while signed in on our family PSN account. If she creates her own PSN account on the 5, can she transmit all of her game data and some "skins" that she has bought on the 4 to the 5?

I don't think you can transfer purchases. You can make a primary/secondary account on the same machine to share games, from what I recall, but you can't actually transfer much, if any.

Purchases can not be transferred/traded between different PSN accounts. The online service will sync game data though, just make sure that you close a game before putting the playstation in sleep mode or switching users/accounts. If you don't the playstation will have issues with transferring game data as it will think the game is still 'active'.
