New video card- will I see a difference

....between 2GB and 4 GB vRam?

First my story. I have an older desktop that I use strictly for light video editing (highlight videos for a high school football team). AMD FX-4130 Quad core processor, 3.80 Ghz, running Windows 7 Pro. 16GB RAM, 64-bit. Cyberlink Powerdirector editting software. It's no powerhouse by any means but it has been getting the job done.

I'm replacing an Nvidia GT-610 (1GB) that crapped the bed at some point. I was lucky enough to have a GT-210 (512MB) laying around to get me by for now, and at least confirm that the 610 was indeed bad.

I'm looking at ordering either a 2GB or 4GB card. I'm wondering if I'll see a big difference, if any at all?

One more note, I've been doing this video thing for quite a while now but may be retiring from it after this coming football season. So I'm not interested in getting a new computer or $1500.00 GPU or anything like that.

I would imagine you would. STill, 4GB of VRAM for 2025 is hella low. Even 8GB of VRAM is on the low side, these days.

Yep. Computer is a few years old and as stated in the OP i'm not interested in upgrading. Just need to replace the GPU.

Oh i know, just giving you a hard time.

After some googling, it seems that Cyberlink Powerdirector will benefit from a GPU with NVENC (which your GT-610 did not have). That should allow you to enable hardware encoding to increase video processing performance.

Let me know if you've got any interest in the GTX 1060.

Holy crap... I think that's the GPU i had in my PC when I graduated back in '11.

I put together a short (3 minute) video of footage from our spring game, using the GT-210 GPU. Rendered at MP4 1920x1080. No issues encountered whatsoever. So I may just run with what I've got. I've got a couple of months to decide.

If my internet grep'ing is working, both of those components released in 2012. Your going have to ensure that whatever card you purchase is compatible with your 2012 motherboard.

Another consideration is getting GPU drivers that are still compatible with Windows 7. You might be best off replacing it with another GT-610, if you can find one. That way you've already got the drivers in place that support the card.

That's my concern. Plus don't want to mess with getting one that would require updating the power supply.

I'm impatient so I went ahead and ordered a GT-730 4GB from Amazon. It allegedly will work for my setup and if not I'll send it back.

A lot depends on your monitor. If you're doing 1080@60hz, it may not be a noticeable increase. If you're doing 8k @ 240Hz, you'll see a jump. You would still be gaming via PowerPoint, but you'd get a few extra slides per minute. I like 1440p @ 120, it's a nice middle ground.

Well, I think I might have talked myself into upgrading my computer with a unit from an authorized Amazon refurbisher that gets good reviews.

Her PCI slot is old and worn out. Hi-yooooooh!

But seriously, I finally settled on buying a used GT-610 2GB on eBay. $7.00 plus shipping, and so far it's working great. Improvement? Hard to tell.

As for upgrading my computer setup, I found out that this may be my last season doing the highlight videos. So I definitely am not keen on buying a whole new rig.

This thread has to be a trolling joke.

Not bragging, but that PC is 18 years old if you're running windows 7 and talking about 4 Gigs of RAM on ANYTHING has an upgrade.

I throw away motherboards and pc's all the time that aren't 2018 or newer, as they serve NO function to me/us.... even for proxmox backup servers and such. No point.
Reading this forum sometimes is like people that can't speak English well trying to differentiate between a "booty call" and a "butt dial".

It's not that at all. In 2025, you can get a pretty souped up nice PC for $200 bucks (Google: Amazon, BeeLink). $200-300 bucks is really a nothing-burger these days, for the most part... in other words, it's not an obstacle.

But yet you're using a PC 18 years old that's 50x less powerful? And a OS that's screaming VIRUS ME that's been unpatchable a good 15-ish years?

Comon'.

A good general rule of thumb is that a PC should last about 5 years and be amortized out at that point.... you are three and a half times that deep.

Read my previous posts. It's a dedicated machine that is serving one purpose, and doing it well. I don't use it to surf, play games, etc. It's not even connected to the internet. I use it about 15 times a year during football season. And after this season I may not be using it at all. You're wasting your time.

It's really going to upset you when I tell you I drive an 11 year old pickup.
