With co-pilot and other AI applications, does an AI laptop bring that much more to the table?

Not really, from what I understand. I think AI laptops have an NPU that may help speed the processing of some AI-related tasks, but it's mainly a marketing ploy at this point.

Also, do forget that MS has implemented Recall in Windows which is a massive data/privacy breach waiting to happen. I suggest avoiding any computer marked as CoPilot ready unless you plan on deleting windows and using Linux.

The NPU is the only thing I've seen touted as a benefit and Dell is stating that CoPilot works better with a AI laptop.

Thanks for the feedback!

Just more spying on you. Avoid them imo. Their processors are worse than non ai ones for around same cost.

A lot depends on who they're marketed to. I think most of the newer "AI" laptops like AMD's Strix Halo were redesigned to put the chip/motherboard/RAM combo into an integrated SoC like Apple did. So the RAM runs a lot faster to be able to handle local LLMs a lot better (like Apple Silicon) without an external GPU. Probably a good way to go as I don't think they're close to something like an Nvidia 5090 GPU being used. But that is a drastically different audience than using CoPilot.

TLDR: for using CoPilot, it's just marketing fluff, for someone that is building on/with LLMs it's something real but costs a butt load of money for anything good.

As has been alluded to, if you need to ask you're probably not doing enough with AI to see much benefit.

Probably right. I'm using it for PowerPoint presentations. Writing business plans. Starting to use it with CAD drawings.
Again, thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, for typical ChatGPT stuff you're not gonna see any significant difference from a decent laptop.
