I want to start tracking advanced stats for a couple of my kids teams. There aren't any good options on the market currently that offer everything that I want. I did a majority of the stats last season with excel by entering the data manually and using pivot tables to run my season and game reports. It worked, but it was pretty cumbersome and it wouldn't allow me to do 100% of what I want to this season.

I have some sql experience but it's been a minute. Should I refresh and build everything in there for the season? If I do that should I do it locally or make the move to Azure?

I also thought about trying the Copilot strategy and trying to build a web app to track the stats. Does anyone have any experience going down that road?

If this is just for you and just local, I would look into something like Claude Code and just give it very defined parameters for what you're looking for. You can probably use docker for some local dbs. Also, don't be afraid to be very specific about exactly what you WANT and ask it questions about what tech would make the most sense.

Be specific about the stats you want to input and the things you want it to make visible, along with how you may want to facet those, any type of trends you want it to identify, etc.

Treat it like a development team that you know will be very, very quick to call out anything you didn't specifically say, even if you expected that it should have known.

I make software for a living, but have had numerous side projects I've messed around with and this is not something that should be overly difficult if you just break it down into really specific things you want to see.

If you know Python (or are willing to learn it), it has a built-in module for using SQLite databases.

Supposedly ChatGPT is pretty good at creating the prompt and framework to feed into Claude for things like this. Lots of the vibe coders say to use ChatGPT to get that part ready for Claude so you don't waste tokens and get things done efficiently.
