Weird issue tonight in iMessage.

My dad and I were texting earlier this evening. I sent him a text telling him to check his email and then I received a response with several odd typos and a message that he had forgotten his email password. He then asked me to send it to him. It looked suspicious as it clearly wasn't written in his voice.

I called him and he was at a neighbor's birthday party and not on his phone. He didn't send the texts about his passwords.

I worked with him to reset his Apple password and sign out of all of his Apple devices.

Does anyone have any insights into this? What else should we be doing?

P.S. He admits to clicking on odd text messages he receives with links embedded, particularly those from "people I know" and links to Facebook.

We had a stern discussion (lecture) about pfishing and other social engineering tactics used by bad actors. He's far too trusting at 75 years old...

Some type of cookiejacking likely that got them into a digital copy of his iMessages. Same thing happened to LTT many months ago and people got into a lot of their accounts using it. Just clicking the links like he is already doing is enough to get caught by it. Don't even have to type anything in.

my boomer mom got got by a text phishing scam about a apple pay (she doesn't use) fraudulent charge with a phone number to call. She thought she was talking to the FBI...for real. It went as bad as using the director of cyber crime (in real life) as the name of the person she was talking to. The person had her so scared that she locked all her doors and turned on all her lights and put her phone in a drawer....

They got all her account info. We have spent the last few days closing accounts and what not. What a headache.

Always good to sit down with parents and try to educate them on this stuff. If they have iPhones, make sure they're on iOS26 and enable the new text filtering and phone screening. They'll complain about the new UI but it'll save a lot of trouble.

My rule of thumb is always let that stuff go to voicemail. Never trust SMS or iMessages from email addresses. 99.9% of mail is junk mail. Check the email address domain. But yea, LTTs video is very alarming that anyone can just jack your phone number. AI is gonna make this stuff hard when they can mimic your voice and writing style.
