My son is interested in creating a Minecraft server for him and his friends to play in. Does anyone have experience with Aternos?

There's always taking an old computer or Raspberry Pi and making it a Linux server for free. You would install headless Ubuntu and then install CasaOS and Crafty. The hard part is figuring out port forwarding and deciding on whether you want to share your public IP or setup a cheap domain.
