I bought a screen extender for my laptop and it has 2 screens that fold out from my laptop. Each screen has a Thunderbolt port and connects to my laptop via a cable.

The kit includes a variety of cables and the best option seems to be

Screen 1
(screen) Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (laptop)

Screen 2
(screen)Thunderbolt to HDMI (laptop)

The problem is the cables they include are way too long, like 3 ft. I was able to get a 1ft thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable. But I am wondering if I can get a 1ft or 1.5 ft HDMI to Thunderbolt cable. I've tried a few on amazon and none of them work. I am thinking they only go thunderbolt to HDMI and won't transmit HDMI to Thunderbolt.

Am I just SOL?

Hdmi cant send power, Thunderbolt can. You likely need to supply it power via usb & use the hdmi to Thunderbolt cable for just picture. Do the monitors have any other ports or just 1 each? Does your laptop have just 1 Thunderbolt port and no usb C ports? You can use a C port since Thunderbolt is backwards compatible with plain C. If that's your power port, they sell adapters to split the C up to allow you to charge and run the output too.

On my laptop I have two powered USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and two USB-A ports

I currently have a cable that goes from the HDMI port on my laptop to the USB-C/thunderbolt port on on of the screens. The cable is powered either.

But it works for some reason. The only thing I can guess is that both screens draw power from the other monitor that is connected/powered by a different USB-C/ Thunderbolt connection to my laptop.

Its possible but might underpower it somewhat. If the screen is on, have you set the screen up as an extension screen yet in windows? It may still be treating it as 1 screen. It may also need a special driver for that monitor to work, check for a download on the manufacturers website. Does the monitor have any other usb ports besides the Thunderbolt port? I would try just another usb c to usb c cable from laptop to monitor first though. That can power and display video usually with newer usb c ports. Try the included cables first. If they work, its likely your cable isnt up to spec for throughput.

Monoprice is great but lets solve the issue first before ordering more cables.

Post the screens you bought so we can tell what all ports those have.

Quote:

If the screen flickers due to insufficient power or brightness adjustment is unresponsive, please connect an external power supply of 5V/3A or higher. If your laptop only has one video output port (usually HDMI or a full-featured Type-C port), use the H5-T cable to generate a second video signal.

Scolll down on the product page where it shows the 3 setup types and match it with your device.
