I'm looking to sell a Browning .270 and replace it with a .308 AR.

Anyone have any thoughts on the .308s?

I see that DPMS makes several .308 models. Anyone own one (DPMS or any other make in .308)?

I don't own one, but have shot several of the DPMS 308's. All of them very spot on. Which model to go w/ just depends on what your application is.

DPMS are very good shooting AR10's. I have shot a couple and both were easily sub moa. Armalite makes a great rifle, but more $$$ and not as accurate from all I have heard.

Actually, I am a fan of both DPMS and Armalite. My DPMS AR is a workhorse that I have abused for years and keeps on performing. My Armalite is likewise a workhorse but produces much better longer range delivery. To each their own, I like both and recommend both. DPMS is best for the money, Armalite will deliver better long range performance, IMO.

I've been checking out the RRA LAR-8s. The mid-length rifle is guaranteed for 1 MOA and the carbine is guaranteed for 1.5 MOA. They're less expensive then the Armalites and I've been very pleased with my RRA .223.

Anybody have any experience with one?

No experience with RRA in 308 but I have absolutely no doubt they are great rifles. RRA makes solid weapons.

This is just my pesonal opninion based on my own circumstances, but part of the appeal to me of an AR is relative cost to shoot. Wouldn't the .308 be multiples in cost compared to the .223?

I realize there's a tremendous power advantage, but most folks have a bolt action to satisfy that need.

Just a thought.

Good point, Goose. Speaking solely on observation, I think MOST(not all) who own an AR10 don't go through the same quantity of ammo as AR15 owners. The 15's get a lot more high volume CQB type work while a lot of the 10's get more long range work, which typically uses a slower more methodical rate of fire. Of course I'm sure cost of ammo and recoil play in to the amount of rounds fired.
Why would someone get an AR10 instead of a bolt action in the same caliber? Same as an AR15, because it's a "black rifle",a cool rifle to own where you can pull off multiple rounds very accurately and quickly.

Oh, don't get me wrong. If I had the money, a fire breathing AR in .308 would be in the safe!

Pretty much no one will have any experience w/ the RRA LAR10 because they are virtually non-existant. I have seen 1 in the "past 2 years that they've supposed to have been out".

a little late to pop in, but...

Recently purchased a Fulton Armory Titan FAR-.308 and love it. A little pricey with all the standards being upgrades, but you get what you pay for: an awesome looking gun that shoots outstanding. It is quite the attention getter as well - did not realize how loud .308s are.

And as to the .223 vs .308 - very fair point as .308 are twice as expensive. My father owns a .223 and reloads both rounds which makes them cheaper than factory but does not change the fact that .308 = 2 x .223 in dinero in shells. On the other hand, with the additional recoil (not bad, just more), sound and whatnot I find myself shooting half as many.

In the end I do not regret it in the least.

Howdy all, I have decided, however illogically, that I am going to build a .308 AR platform hopefully with DPMS parts as they become available. Basically, even after scouring arf.com for hours, I cannot find a comprehensive parts list of everything I would need to build a complete rifle from the ground up. Can anyone link to a comprehensive list or at least point me in the right direction? Thanks for sharing your wisdom with a noob to the world of EBRs.

The LaRue OSR is on my list of things to buy if I don't go the M1 Garand or M1A route. Either way I would be waiting for MONTHS to get them.

The only .308 AR I've shot is the LaRue OSR. It is a very nice gun. Once the sun went down I got to shoot it some more with a PVS-27 night vision sight fitted. That was completely awesome. Pinging off steel targets hundreds of yards away in almost complete darkness was a lot of fun.

Goose, one reason to have a durable 308 around ...

Unlike AR15s, when you choose a path with .308ARs you have committed one way or another. Armalite doesn't swap mags or uppers with DPMS. I went Armalite and I'm happy with that, for me.

I need to start saving now for when or if the HK417 makes it to market....

Does anyone still make an AR in 7.62x39? I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Colt I was offered years ago.

Yes a couple of ppl do. You can change out the barrel and bolt and charging handel in an ar and can make it to 762x39. Robinson armament makes a piston driven 7.62x39 that is awesome

A Robinson isn't an AR. The only "AR"s still available in 7.62x39 are DPMS. Come to think of it...there may be a few companies out there doing uppers, but as far as I can remember, only DPMS is doing complete rifles.

Edit: If anyone is looking for an AR in a commie round, S&W does do the M&P15 in 5.45x39, but now I'm digressing from the OP.

I think Model 1 Sales offers 7.62 x 39mm. You might check their website to make sure. Seems like there were some others, but I don't remember...

I already have an order in for a mini 30. I have friends that want 7.62x39 in an AR platform. I have mixed feelings.

This is me- but I want one so badly it might even be my AR before I get a .223.

I'm looking at the Armalites...
