Hey guys,

As I get more and more into hunting out west, I would like to become better and more comfortable at longer ranges. Do you have any recommendations on day or multi day classes that you've taken or have good reviews for? I'm based in Houston, Tx so the closer the better.

Thanks for the help!

Rifles only does classes in Kingsville, from what I've heard the instructor is old school traditional/fundamentals focused. Closer to Houston look to Navasota at Pumps Precision Rifle Training, Chase is a good guy and I've been thinking about getting some guys together to go spend a weekend with him to polish up what we've been cobbling together on our own.

I've read about and watched videos on Long Range University from GunWerks.

https://www.gunwerks.com/store/long-range-university

Seem like great classes but they're all in Cody, Wyoming.

Would really like to find something similar in Texas.

The 1st formal school I went to was Mark Thompson's Long Range course based upon his scope (custom Leupold reticle) and the WBY 30-378. I attended the course with an older colleague with a mutual interest in shooting. The 2 day course was located in Logan, Utah. I hit steel out to 1000 yards with the 30-378 and used a muzzleloader to hit steel out to 500 with peep sights. Needless to say it was a confidence builder. My longest shot while hunting up to that point was 270 yards.

The issue with the Thompson system is the reticle is designed for 4500' and a set temp / pressure. I realized that this system was flawed because I was hunting at 7-9k' at varying temps / pressures, etc. When you study your ballistics, you realize that 1 MOA here, 1 MOA there equates to maimed / lost animals.

I sold my Thompson scopes (had 2: 1 on a 30-378 and 1 on a 257 WBY) and went to Night Force with MOA turrets. As a hand loader, I was really motivated to get tight groups at distance.

Good glass is essential to your quest to build LR skills. The NF glass is heavy but tough as nails.

I shot at a 1000 yard range at Badlands Tactical in OK (just north of Wichita Falls). This would be a great place for a TexAgs group course.

I took my son (then 12) to NTO Shooting School in Wyoming in 2017. We had a blast shooting silhouettes in true hunting situations. The grand finale was the 30" plate at 1291 yards.

Since getting into LR shooting, I've had ethical (i expect this will be debated) kills out to 775 yards.

I'd be happy to offfer my opinions on getting geared up to shoot LR. One day, I might even offer instruction in practical LR shooing (hunting based). Attending the courses is fun but adds up over time.

TL;DR: Long range shooting is the cats a$$. Hearing steel plates ring out at hundreds of yards is one of the true joys in life! Having confidence in your setup translates into more opportunitities in the field. Get good glass, know your ballistics, shoot often.

Rifles Only is legit from what I've heard. Had a handful of people I know take their precision rifle courses. Kingsville is far from houston but I'm looking to take this course soon.

Check out ATX Precision. The guy that owns and instructs, Clayton Hergett has an interesting story. He's from the panhandle, went to Tech for s year and then the Naval Academy. Went through BUDS and became a SEAL. Met his wife, an Army chopper pilot, while deployed. They live in our old neighborhood.

I took an AR-15 class from him last year and was really happy with it. All the classes are held at Reveille Ranch outside of Burnet. Super nice guy, would never know what he's been up to by just chatting with him. Definitely knows his stuff. Prices are pretty reasonable too. Last I looked his long distance courses were around $600 for two days. These courses actually have a classroom part where he breaks it all down and teaches rather than just putting you behind a gun and saying "giddy-up". Message me if you have any further questions.

I went to this guys class. Little far from Houston though. I learned a lot and his personal range goes out to 800 yards.

Lesson #1- Dont booger-hook the bang switch.

OP- good on you for seeking professional instruction... you won't regret it. (FWIW- I used a guy up around Waxahachie but it sounds like you've gotten a few good local recommendations.) Good luck and enjoy!

So just did the ATX Class last weekend. The Rifles Only class didn't line up schedule wise and they mostly do the 5 day courses which didn't work planning wise for me.

Besides getting food poisoning Saturday morning it was a really great weekend. We did some class work, Q&A, and rifle fitting. Afterwards we took to the range. I was really happy with how far I was able to reach out consistently and humbled by how good some of these guys have to be at much longer ranges. Learned a good amount on wind, ranging without range finder, elevation, and other environmental impacts.

Most notable shots:

560 yards on a 6 inch target moving at walking speed.
800 yards on a 4 inch heart target inside of a 13 inch silhouette.

Appreciate all the inputs, just wanted to give a follow up post.

A buddy of mine is in the Army and occasionaly hangs out with some of the SOF guys (or did, he's out of that line of work specifically now) - he's been trying to get me to commit to a time to go to Rifles Only with him. He's a far better than average shot and a lot of the SOF guys he worked with all said great things about Rifles Only, because they had been through the course.

I have no personal knowledge, other than the reviews seem to all be along the same lines and I put a lot of value in what my buddy says with respect to long range shooting because the little butthole is good at it.

"Soon" for me turned out to be 8 years. Wow !

Just finished up weekend PR 1 course at RO. They said they're going to implement a PR2 weekend course too so you don't have to do a combo on a M-F

Highlights were: getting a chance to get DOPE out to 800yards in windy south Texas and hitting 8/10 shots on movers at 420yards on my second set! Def. Drills the fundamentals and gives you a lot of freedom to figure it out on your own. Hopefully it's not another 8 years before I take part2

I will second Clayton. If you have limited budget and time the positions course is very practical to hunting.

I am only 3 hrs from Cody now, may jump on the Gunwerks training as well but yes looks expensive.

I would recommend FTW SAAM in Barksdale - pricey. someone took me to the class the first time - I would pay it in a heartbeat based on what I learned. Been twice. Some military guys training the first time we were there. 36" plate at 1400. Was "aiming" 60' up and about 9' on windage. They also teach you to shoot off sticks, use backpacks in different situations, etc and test your skills to see how far you can keep your reticle in the kill zone (hit the steel) with those situations. Cross-legged with a backpack - roughly 500 yds for example. Massive improvement in hunting situations - best hunting shot was a turkey at the base of the neck at 800. It is addicting.
