These were all the rage when they came out in the late 80s. Found this cleaning out some things a few weeks ago. Didn't have the heart the throw it out. Took a lot of different routes home because of it.

My mom might still have theirs.

Born in 1985 my favorite thing to do on family vacation road trips was to study the map. I would be back in the third row of the suburban by myself and go over all of the roads.

I'd bet my parents have at least 3 of those. Maybe 5+.

I used to stare at those things for hours as a kid. Maps have always fascinated me. Maybe it's because I have a terrible sense of direction.

I have two. This is the one that has any semblance of a cover.

Hell yes and I still use it.

The last time one of my grown kids were in my truck they said, " you still using this dinosaur? "

Had one for years for storm chasing. My wife cut it up a few years ago to make decorative drawer liners for the kids' dressers.

Have a couple. One is on my truck. Use it when have no gps, wish they made them still. Have not looked.

Hell yes, love those damn things. Add this to the road-trip starter Pack for kids from the 80s/90s.

These atlases fueled my love of maps. And the terrible binding that comes apart and rips/folds/tears is very nostalgic.

Yep, have one and still use it. GPS will get you from here to there, but with that map book you can clearly see alternate routes and perhaps more interesting ways to travel. Maybe you can do that with a car GPS but I sure don't know how without a lot of time dragging routes while scaling up and down. So on any trip I start with the map book, jot a few notes and then use GPS to follow that route.
So three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar.................You can't convince me that's a coincidence.

You can still buy them online. I keep one in each vehicle

You bring up an interesting point. These maps ought to be in everyone's SHTF pile. If things really go sideways, the map is still going to work OK.

Looks like mine and I still carry in truck. Found me some shortcuts thru south Texas chasing oilfield in the 90's.

I had the green one like that which was focused on national parks and wildlife refuges. As far as I'm concerned it was like Google Maps or Google Earth. I would study that thing for hours finding public hunting lands I wanted to explore.

Are you married to a certain frugal mom from this site?

That and my Mapscos of the two big TX cities I frequented the most were tucked into the folded-up jump seats of my little Mazda 4x4 at all times. Truck is my dad's deer lease truck now and they're probably still there, lol

Still have several of these - way more detailed but not practical for long road trips - better for river access points and access to public hunting spots

Still carry one in my pickup. Easier to use than a phone for us old geezers… as long as I can find my glasses

My dad still has a few-- he pulls them out every time they are driving somewhere. He will study them for weeks before a trip.

He also keeps one of these in his truck, despite not living in Harris County for the last 10 years

When I drove back to Houston from Seattle in 08 I used those big atlases. I could've printed off map quest maps or used a TomTom GPS or something but I figured it'd be more fun using an atlas and it definitely was.
