I just order my first mechanical broadheads...blood sport grave digger chisel tip. Looking for advice on shooting mechanical vs. fixed and if these grave diggers are any good. Thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

Need to provide more details about your specific setup to get actual good answers, vs people's opinions.

1. Draw weight?
2. Draw length?
3. Compound / recurve?
4. Arrow weight?

I prefer fixed to mechanical, so I can go right up the opposite front leg and not worry about hitting shoulder causing penetration issues.

That said, I have a Sevr 1.75, a QAD exodus, and an iron will single bevel with bleeders in my quiver. Probably reaching for the iron will first this weekend.

Compound bow 65 lbs, 28" draw length and not sure on total arrow weight. I'm shooting the Easton fmj if that helps any.

The best archery hunters I know use Grave Diggers on deer. They are pulling 70+ lbs with perfectly tuned bows and long draw lengths. That's a deadly combination with a nasty broadhead. I'm not sure I have enough energy for that broadhead outside about 20 yards on deer sized game.

You'd have to answer the questions above for any more specifics. Most likely if you're shooting deer inside 20, you'll be good to go.

My blind is 12 yards from the feeder so I'm only going to be shooting 10-15 yards. I'm not experienced enough yet to feel comfortable outside that range.

I have both in my quiver with Rage mechanical two blade and fixed blade G5 Montecs. I will say that I feel much more confident slinging a fixed blade but I also have not had any issues with the Rage malfunctioning.

I know that didn't really answer your question but just my two cents to help you make a decision.

I'm a much bigger fan of Grim Reaper mechanical broadheads than Rage, fwiw.

I'm going to try out the SEVR hybrids in Kansas next week, if all goes according to plan.

Me too … especially after seeing how they performed on a doe I shot last season.

Careful pushing the grim reapers too hard. I shot a buck with one of the 2" whitetail specials out of a crossbow. Hit nothing but ribs and all the blades broke off on the front side ribs. Little more than a field point hole.

Maybe that's because they make one specific for crossbows because of the faster speeds. My son and I are not exclusive bow hunters but grim reapers work for us when we use our bows.

I had a hard time finding the GR for the crossbow. I almost bought ones made for a bow and luckily I saw the ones for the crossbow underneath the bow mechanicals.

I finally killed a deer with my bow a couple weeks ago. Decided to carry 2ea B3 Meg's and 3 Iron Will single bevels in the quiver. I wanted to try the Meg if I had an open shot from whatever tree I was on, hunting some corps land. I did find one with a great shooting lane off to my strong side, and the stars aligned. 22 yard shot. That mechanical was impressive. She was slightly quartered to, and I let it go right behind the shoulder. Not a full pass through, but the head did come out the other side, double lunged. It was an open field run about 130 yards. The head had 1 of 3 blades out, and 2 that were closed and in a harder position to open than normal. Hard to think about how that happened.

I'm a firm believer in heavy arrows and the power of single bevels, but also worried about blood trails on public land with neighbors I don't know. So if I'm in an open area, I'm shooting the B3 Meg any day. Back in the thickets, it's an Iron Will or Tooth of the Arrow next.

That's crazy. I've put a Fatal Steel through a vertebrae and the blades came out bent and not reusable, but not broken. The head itself wasn't bent or dulled at all. I've used various Grim Reapers on multiple species and I've never had one break, unless you count bending or gouging as breaking.

Not every shot is the same, though, and not every part is manufactured perfectly. A 2" mech out of a crossbow is definitely a test though.

I've really wanted to love Sevr, but they have deflected badly for me on multiple animals. I hunt from stands that are 18-22' and with some ground slope that leads to severe angles and I've had three shots that deflected significantly in the past two years. I shot a buck last year hard quartering away, 10 yards 22' above ground, went in just below his backstrap behind the shoulder and came out his neck just below his throat patch. His head / neck was 100% upright at the shot. Literally 90* deflection. Straight line exit would have been just in front of his left leg and low.

At the high angles with two rear deploying blades the broadhead just rides the ribs down is the best answer I can come up with.

This year I'm back to 3 blades. I've found three blades (at least in mechanicals) to make a straighter, more predictable path through an animal.

Any of the Grim Reapers are good, NAP Spitfire, Wasp Jackhammer, etc are good. Especially at 68/28 and under 20 yards.

My experience with Grim Reapers has been outstanding. Their slogan "Watch'em drop" has been true for me. Even though they are an old design I plan to keep using them until I at least have one run out of sight.

That said, I killed a buck with a Rage Trypan this past weekend. Hard to argue with the entry wound and blood trail.

Those are my two favorite mechs.

Sevr and Beast was "meh" for me. I don't need blades pivoting or reducing their diameter (springs) inside a deer. Could be helpful for elk, but that's when I pick Viper Tricks and Exodus.

Goodness those Mega Meats looks nasty. It looks like a 3-blade Rage Trypan. I think if I crossbow hunted I'd pick that head. I'm not sure I have the energy to use that with my compound.

Shot a doe with the Sevr 1.75 this friday. Went about 18 yards before expiring, and it was like a red carpet.

Pretty impressed, and I am a fixed blade guy

Big fan of the sevr heads. I'm shooting the ti 1.5 and have shot 4 animals w them, all recovered.

Even with my 26.5 DL I got pass thrus on all but one (hung up on vanes on off side)
