I have a year old girl Labrador who is descended from hunting royalty on both sides. We're not going to hunt her or breed her - strictly a family pet, neighborhood walker and pool buddy who's already been fixed. This is the latest in a line of girl Labs we've gotten from the same breeder -- all of whom were couch dogs and pool floats -- but this one is a bit more unhinged than her predecessors.

We need to get her better manners than we can provide at home or at Houston day schools.

In short I'm looking for a 2 week or so Lab reform school that won't send us back a robodog.

All suggestions gratefully received.

When I get my lab pup I will be sending him to Best Retrievers Puppy Imprinting program for 2 weeks, but the cut off limit is 16 weeks old. I will be watching for the recommendations you get here.

Best Retrievers in Paige is outstanding. Aggie owned and operated by Rody and Kristen Best. They do puppy imprinting, obedience, gun dog, and competition training.

Ryan Barr at The Barr Kennel near Madisonville does retriever and obedience training. His dogs are happy and well mannered.

Just to set your expectations, this isn't going to be a 2-week process for any substantial change in your dogs behavior.

Drake Sporting Dogs. Blanco, Tx. But it is a 6 week board and train. You won't really get a lot accomplished in just a 2 week course.

Very much appreciated and not unexpected. My real problem is that Puppers and my wife are now best friends and wife is hysterical about Puppers going to reform school. I've offered two weeks in Hawaii if Puppers can go get straight and was turned down flat.

I train my retrievers every day here in Cypress and get approached a lot. I have taken 5 client dogs from people in my neighborhood who want their dog to act like mine. I tell them that I can shape them up relatively quickly as these animals have a desire to play, exercise, and please us. They're always in awe of how fast I can get them tuned up and listening to commands and I express to them that if they go home and expect all this training to stick while doing the same things as before, they've just wasted all their money.

Not 1 person heeded my warning and it's the same "I just don't have time" excuse, every time. I have lots on my plate and it doesn't take a lot to reinforce good training, but it is mandatory. So, whoever you get, make sure you listen at pick-up time and build upon the foundation. Otherwise, just light that money on fire.

Good points. When I get my lab puppy he's going to Best Ret. for their 2 week program at 15 weeks. I don't expect remarkable transformation in 2 weeks but they said I would be instructed in all the skills they taught him while he was here. The kicker is I'm retired and will have unlimited time to continue with training when he comes home. Hope it works out that way.

I shared this with my wife and am now looking forward to business travel to NYC for a week.

I sent my Golden pup to Cour's Retriever's for the basic gundog for 3 months. Extremely happy with the results. Luke and Taylor are extremely hands on and really invested. Highly recommend.

You likely know this, but for those who don't, Luke is a Best Retrievers understudy who has some great success on his own and has really made a name in the SRS game. Are you going to run hunt tests or just hunt with her?

Just going to hunt with her! But yes I am aware. They just moved into there new facility in Giddings when Molly Mae was finishing up. New place looked sweet.
