The bark is coming off of one side of the tree. It gives nice shade, but I really don't want it to fall through my pergola. I'm leaning real hard towards taking it out. What do my TexAgs brethren say?

It's a hackberry that is irreparably damaged and weakened on the side opposite a permanent structure, unable to provide any strength in bending should the prevailing winds blow towards your pergola.

I say leave it.

With a hackberry, it's not if it will blow over, it's when. Even the healthy looking ones like to randomly fall over or break in half when a squirrel farts on them.

Yeah we have a bunch on fence lines around the ranch. They are a pita and even healthy looking ones sometimes fall down and drop large branches. Large ones can be real hard to take down with a large excavator.
Cut it down.

Truth. I fought one sprouting in my landscape and it took a year to beat it down.

Based on my wife's car that got crushed by a healthy looking hackberry that fell during a minor thunderstorm I say cut it down.
