Mid June I'm planning on falling off the grid for a week and taking my son camping and fishing. Trying to decide on hitting the San Juan, animas, and gunnison. Never fly fished anywhere other than tx nm and Colorado. Any other suggestions for that time of year? I'll be on the Taylor in July so I was thinking about maybe Idaho, Montana or maybe nw Arkansas. Looking for opinions

Wait a couple of weeks and fish the salmon fly hatch on the Rio Grande at Creede. Durangler's out of Durango guide there. It's nonstop action. My son and fish there when he was about 13 - a great memory for both of us.

Or if you're wanting to do something different, the Missouri out of Craig, MT. Headhunters Fly Shop.

I've looked into some overnight float fishing trips in Black Canyon of the Gunnison, but never been able to make it work with my schedule.

Creede and Lake City are great spots.

When my son was between 8th and 9th grade I felt like we needed a dad and lad bonding trip. We left Wifey at home and drove from East Texas to Trappers lake in Colorado. We went early to mid June. There was still a little snow in shady spots but the lake as well as others that we hiked to were clear of ice. They had cabins but we decided to primitive camp. He had a cot, I chose an air mattress which deflated to nothing every night. We had a great time and the cutthroats and brookies were ravenous. It is one of the most special memories for both of us. I did a trip report on here for it back in the day but TexAgs has deleted those old posts..

Salmon Idaho. Salmon River but I've never been that time of the year. Small remote town with good food, hotel, and downtown fly shop with guide service.
I'd call the shop and ask about mid June but that's my new favorite place.

Steamboat was always good with kids also.

Timeframe is up against cotton planting and replanting. Just trying to get away and regroup. June 10th is the longest day of the year around here.

I live in Meeker, CO and that will be prime time fishing on the White River and in the alpine lakes in the Flat Tops. Would be an amazing trip for you and your son. Happy to help you figure out logistics, where to fish and anything else I can.

I've got a former coworker that has family ties to sable mountain outfitters who may tag along on the trip. Don't know if you know them or not.

I know Ann Marie well. Happy to help if you head the way. Sable lake is a great hike and fishing is phenomenal.

Nate is who might be tagging along, if he's not in Canada.

Hit me up if you have questions about fishing the San Juan. I spend much of my summer guiding the juan and can help in any capacity you need. Just wrapping up 3 days, taking a couple days off then on another long stretch.
