Need to get a new 12ga shotgun for ranch for some mix of shooting clays, birds and coyotes.
I want to get an over/under and am setting budget at max of $1200 for now.

I've seen lots of reviews of various CZ, Yildez, Mossberg and even a couple others including Weatherby.

Reliability, ease of use, limited maintenance and limited recoil are most critical points.
Dont need a fancy or high end gun just something that a variety of people can shoot easily and will shoot for a long time.

Suggestions please....

CZ or Weatherby make nice O/u's for your budget. You may be able to get a new Franchi for a little more.

A used good condition Winchester 101 or Ruger Red Label might fall into that price range as well.

I was looking at Weatherby Orion, Mossberg Gold Reserve, CZ Redhead.
Leaning to Weatherby because I just suspect it will be super reliable and smooth but have never shot one.
I have shot both a Mossberg Gold and also a Silver and both werent bad

I don't know where you live but if you will check some of your higher end pawn shops they will oftentimes have low use O/U's. Also good gun shops usually do also.
Last year I picked up a Browning 385 with 32" barrels for $1100 at a pawn shop in our little town. It had little evidence of being used much.
If you hunt a little and not be in a huge hurry, you can usually find an older more quality gun that what you pay more money for new today.

You won't be disappointed with the Orion. It feels and handles very close to my Citori and a good bit better than a CZ, in my opinion.

When I had this requirement I held the Weatherby Orion and a CZ Teal Target (like the Drake but a Bass pro exclusive with lighter wood). Two of my semi autos are Weatherby - SA08 is Turkish and SAS Italia is Italian so I was leaning Weatherby. bought the CZ. Great gun

Older Weatherby Orions were made in Japan. Now they are made in Turkey, so is CZ's O/U's, and Mossberg Silver line. Japan built Orions had better wood and more quality fit and finish, imho.

Turkish uses to mean crap guns but I'm not sure that's the case anymore. My Turkish made SA08 has many thousands of rounds through it. People love Canik pistols. My Turkish made CZ is excellent.

" Limited recoil" in a 12ga. O/U does not compute, especially shooting field loads. I outgrew my O/U's after shooting 5 Stand and Sporting C's all day and my shoulder feeling like a mule kicked me there all day.
Spent a good deal of money with Gil Ash and Briley's " custom fitting" my O/U's trying to mitigate recoil.
Decided to give up and changed to quality Semi Autos.
I can now enjoy a full day of shooting target loads or field loads without having to go get massage therapy and smell like Ben Gay for a week after……and my scores went up to boot.
I know I gave up "looking cool" at the range with my high dollar O/U but I'm old now and don't care.

I am not knocking Turkish built firearms. They allow an affordable means to some very functional firearms.
Personally, and I stress personally, I would rather own and shoot an older classic firearm that, historically proven, will hold or increase in value in the future that I can pass down. The cheaper imports do not have a trend to increase in value much, albeit they are good shooters.

Traditionally, Winchester 101s built in Japan and later Belgium were rock solid. A Japanese Weatherby Orion is awesome as well but haven't followed the market for the 15+ years since I bought mine. If those are in your budget then I'd definitely go that direction

12ga O/U is not going to be limited recoil.

Not the new SLB made in Turkey, the original factory in Japan that's no longer in operation

Tough to find but great guns for the money and cool story

I probably should have clarified that slightly heavier guns with good recoil pad.

Field grade guns are usually built on the lighter side because you carry and walk with them all day hunting.
Sporting guns are typically longer barrels and heavier to minimize recoil fatigue from all day shooting clays etc….and I'm telling Noah about the flood I know.
It's been my experience that proper fit, recoil pads and weight help to mitigate felt recoil but at the end of a long day of shooting O/U's and SxS's punish you.

Yeah
I don't own an auto shotgun. Only pumps which are somewhat similar to OU or SxS in kick. Just prefer the reliability of twin barrel break opens vs pump action. My Winchester only holds 3 rounds and Mossberg only 2 anyway so not much difference.
No I haven't removed the plugs

Anyone shoot a .410 in O/U or SxS? Thinking about picking one up and was looking for reviews

I don't think break barrel anything are inherently more reliable than pumps. I've personally seen more issues with cheap sxs and ous than I have with all the 870s, 500s and 1300s I've been around, combined

Yes. .410 and 28 gauge in an type is sweet. But make O/U and SS comfortable to shoot all day.

Got any recommendations for the .410? I've got a silver pigeon 28 already.

My wife (shoots a 28) used to say I was "cheating" when I'd out shoot her with a 20.

Despite using both a 20 and 28 last year, she still won't let up so definitely shooting a .410 this coming season

Most are great shooting guns.

But better have $$ for shells.

Second this. I have an SKB in 20ga that is a joy to shoot. One day I'll pick up a matching 12ga.

The only drawback is that they have fixed chokes, so you'll have to send them to Carlson or Briley to get the barrels honed and threaded for interchangeable chokes if you feel the need for them.

Was going to suggest the Franchi instinct LX because it was around that price when I bought it about 10 years ago, but their website says MSRP around 2k now. I like mine but guess it may be a bit over what you're looking for. It works well but doesn't have the higher end engraving or wood. If you find one used near your price range, definitely take a look.
