North Carolina man James Pulliam ended up in the hospital and a coyote laid dead on the ground after an attack unfolded last Friday in Roxboro, according to ABC11.
City officials say the coyote attack happened around 7:00 p.m. in the neighborhood of Somerset Drive, according to the same report. Pulliam was having a smoke when a coyote emerged from the woods and attacked him.
"He jumped on me and I caught him in the air, he was biting me, and so when I threw him down and I'm trying to slide out of the way, he just kept coming…I had to rip my left hand out of his mouth, and when I got my left hand out, I just choked him all the way till the police got there," he explained to the outlet.
Pulliam further told the outlet, "They took X-rays and then gave me rabies shots that hurt worse than the attack."

If not rabid, I have to think dumbass somehow snuck up on the coyote or trapped it and grabbed the damn thing and all hell broke loose. His story is just not adding up for me.

I don't know why this is so damn funny to me. I know it's probably true about the rabies shot but it's just funny it was used as a quote

Interesting. But, that holds nothing to the guy on here who shot the coyotes attacking his dog and ended up putting a bullet in his own dog's ass (it wouldn't be funny if his dog had died or seriously hurt but the way it unfolded is a pretty good one).

I feel for the guy then as I had to take the entire series of rabies shots when I was 12 years old.
Don't know if anything has changed since then, but the doc told my parents that even though I was taking the shots, I could still get the disease.

I heard they're about $8k each. I talked to a guy that got his whole family (4) the shot and insurance wouldn't cover it. They didn't really need it but he insisted they did

I think the current generation of rabies shots is much less painful than the ones from decades ago.

A neighbor works for USDA damage control, he's had tons of rabies vaccines, and now they titrate his blood to see if he needs a booster. Apparently, his anti-rabies vaccine level is so high in his blood, he won't need a booster for decades

Do you know if the shots now are definite defense if you are bitten by a known positive tested animal? I realize nothing is an absolute but I remember how scared I was when our doc told me, even though I was getting the shots, I could still die from rabies.
Pretty traumatic for a 12 year old. Just wondering if that still the same or not?

Besides this neighbor with USDA, I have a good friend who retired as a Vet at the TVDML. The latter did necropsies of animals to determine cause of death.

Obviously I'm not a doctor, and am repeating second hand info. But both routinely dealt with rabid animals, and my understanding was that the vaccines they got were preventative, and would keep them from getting rabies.

My dad would stop what he was doing when Roadrunner and Coyote came on during Looney Tunes when me and my brother were watching saturday morning cartoons. He was always amused by the plans of the coyote.
