Overhead door in Tyler is pretty worthless. I'm building a garage and ordered a 16x9 garage door through them. I asked my salesman for the specs of the finished opening but cannot seem to get a definitive answer. Does a 16x9 garage door need an exactly 16x9 finished opening? I'm framing it tomorrow.

Not hard. Get a level a square and a tape measure.

If you're using 1 1/2" thick gargage jambs (typically 2x8 material), the rough opening would be 3" wider than the door dimensions. For the height, it depends if you have a dropped garage apron, sloped garage floor, etc.

This is the plan for a house I'm building with a standard 16x 7 ft garage door as an example

usually 3"-4" wider than the actual door. Wider is better, you can always fur in with 1x if it's too wide.

With a 16' - assume you have looked into what the overhead beam needs to be to clear that span already.

Thanks Augustus. I got er done. The beam is 3 2x12s plus 3/4 plywood all sitting on a 2x6. All glued, carriage bolted and lagged together.

Intended to be helpful. I suggest installing temporary bracing to keep walls plumb. Also, permanent bracing. It doesn't take very much wind to rack the super structure. Again, wanting to be helpful, no criticism intended.

Thanks for that. If you looked that close you probably noticed that the siding guy needs to finish the siding and the electrician needs to put covers on the outlets. Funny thing the painter, electrician and siding guys are all the same person.
