Put something on all 4 sides so that drawer pull doesn't look like a pull. A circle pull with a carved star?

I've been looking, but most are full size drawer pulls, and not the right scale.

What was the process for making the pieces ?

everything was hand turned.

the king/queen i used a round file to give some texture on the crown, and the castles i drilled out the top and then slotted with a saw.

I worried about contrast of pecan and mesquite not being stark enough, so i did a good bit of testing with different finishes. The lighter wood is finished with a water based lacquer, but i actually soaked them for a few minutes in a 12% hydrogen peroxide solution to help whiten them. The mesquite I used an oil based lacquer because it helps darker a little, but i did not want to stain the pieces at all. I wanted natural color of wood as much as possible.

The knights i carved:

turned a round blank

cut the sides:

drew and cut the profile

then sawed/filed/sanded the ears:


then marked the back where i wanted to profile:


then drew lines where i wanted the mane:

and used the edge of a roundover file to cut the slots for the mane:

then small strips of sandpaper for lots of sanding:


they intimidated me the most. I also get picky that my pawns are not machine level precise with one another. My OCD wants them all perfect, but if you look down the line, they obviously are not.
