Baseball coach caught a bullet at the RAC in Waller. This could have been much worse.

Just for clarification this was at the Katy location and not Waller. Across the street is a gun range but so far things have been hush hush on what direction the bullets came from.
Anyone know how far a .556 or 308 ricochet could travel ?

I believe Waller Co. Unaware of other locations, but we are probably talking about the same place.

Is it a public range, or shooters on a nearby property?

The rac Katy is off 2855

The Waller location is off Betka road

Not sure on the range other that it is across 2855 and have heard Katy LEO use it.

Looks like berm to field distance is ~.7 miles

I don't think a ricochet could go that far off a berm but but guess it is possible if hit rocks

On gps almost looks like some kind of berm/ shooting range set up next door to the fields as well but hard to tell exactly on my phone

You're correct. They all run together eventually.

It looks like the police range faces south. Looking at it, can't imagine them shooting towards the fields.

I'm very familiar with this area and the ballpark. The range to the west is Katy PD. I cannot imagine it came from there.

Other than that there's no berms anywhere around there. It's flat-ass Katy Prairie.

Don't know which direction the shooting came from but I know several people who were at the ballpark this morning and they were terrified.

Supposedly some dumbasses were target shooting and didn't pay attention to much of anything. IQs that don't even reach room temperature numbers.

It's been a really long time since I was an Infantry LT planning a live fire maneuver range, but for 5.56 the max Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) was something like 2500m. That's not for ricochets though - that's for some idiot pointing his rifle up at the optimum ballistic angle and letting fly.

According to wiki, the WWI and WWII vintage British Vickers MG, .303 caliber, could reach out up to 4500m in the indirect fire role.

Yahoos out blasting away with their buddies, probably with beer involved, is entirely believable.

I don't think that's what happened. I think his brain literally wasn't processing it and the fight or flight never kicked in.

Go watch videos of the Mandalay Bay shooting and there was a small group of people doing the same thing with gunfire hitting all around them.

So many stories came out of Iraq and Afghanistan of people just standing there in their first live action, and that's when they were expecting the fight.

Same here. I may have some old overlays, but I recall the SDZ on both NATO rounds being significant. Way more than you'd think.

If everyone could shoot tracers at a berm once, they'd know ricochets are worth mitigating.

Looks like it's the field that faces NE judging from the shadows. Some of the shots sounded still supersonic so rifle probably <1,000 yards away, not ricochets. Also some of that sounded full auto, possibly FRT or something like that. I saw on one thread that people at the go kart track just north of there had some shots go over a few years back. There's one large property that spans the entire distance between the ball field and go kart track.

WTF is wrong with the guy in the red just standing there?

Besides the fact that he never once took any kind of cover but even after people are screaming to call 911 he just casually stands there smelling the roses like nothing ever happened.

Very odd behavior in a situation like that.

The guy who posted that on FB is an Ag and a good friend of mine. That's from his nephew's team and we have friends on that team.

They're a 12U team so they would be playing on the NE field where I dropped this pin: RAC-Katy NE field

B
ut, I don't know that there's any way to determine the direction the shots came from just via video. And unless something has been built in the last 6 months or so there aren't any berms on neighboring properties other than the Katy PD range. I've been all over those tracts because they're all being sold for development. The sound of the shots put them pretty damn close to the ballpark - we've been at Lindsay Lyons in Humble next to the Harris Co. Sheriff's Academy and range when they're popping off full auto and it's not nearly that loud and that range is about 300 yards from the closest fields.

It's probably a minor miracle only one person got hit and no kids were injured because you can hear the shots pinging off metal but unless they've installed them recently there were no lights out here just 2 years ago so I'd think the shots were hitting metal fence posts or the huge posts they use to anchor the backstop netting.

Fortunately it doesn't appear to be a targeted thing just stupidity but stupidity has killed a whole damn lot of people in the course of human history.

Luckily, ricochets don't usually go nearly as far, because they're tumbling and/or damaged - either way, not nearly as aerodynamically efficient.

Fun fact: the first .30-06 loading adopted by the Army, the M1 ball, used a 174 grain bullet copied from the Swiss GP-11 round. The ballistics were actually too good, and made most existing rifle ranges unsafe, so the Army went back to the drawing board and came up with the less efficient 150 grain M2 ball round.

Someone on Reddit posted that the shooting took place on land owned by a Houston doctor named Hany Ahmed. There is a plot of land owned by Ahmed due east of the fields. The land is separated from the fields by another plot of land owned by some Chinese doctors from Houston.

Also, two men in their 20's with Arab names were booked into the Waller County Jail for Deadly Conduct - Discharge Firearm yesterday.

Yes, that is correct. I suspect the shooters were younger grown men related to the doctor that had an AR and wanted to shoot it out on the land but had no real experience with firearms and possessed zero situational awareness WRT the directions they were shooting.

600-700 yards away??? Didn't see the type of weapon used. 550 is max effective range for point and 650 for area for m4.

I took that to mean they were shooting 600-700 yards away without a proper backstop or awareness of what was beyond their targets.

I'm not any kind of firearms guy, but I'm thinking that "total range" is a lot further out than "effective range"

It's not like they were intentionally targeting anyone.

Almost every box of .22 ammo I've seen says "Range: 1 mile". They may be trying to scare you into being careful, but that's 1320 yards

The suspects had to have been doing some mujahideen type celebratory shooting to make a 556/223 hit a man in the shoulder 600-700 yards away. The bullet drop from a normal AR is about the height of a normal man at 600 yards, to hit someone in the shoulder at that distance you'd need to be aiming 10 feet high at 100 yards.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin slammed the Biden administration after the shooting for "not vetting" the immigrants let into the country, especially from high-threat nations.

"Not only did Biden fail the American people by leaving our borders wide open to criminals, but he also legally allowed them to gain status and citizenship to terrorize our communities," said McLaughlin. "These individuals from high threat counties were let in by the Biden Administration. They clearly were not vetting the aliens they were letting legally enter our country and even become U.S. citizens."

"This horrific act of terror, the firing on children praying before the start of a baseball game, is pure evil," she added.

I'm not saying it's not possible but nothing thus far indicates it was intentional or targeted. It's entirely possible this will come out in the investigation but right now it's just speculation.

We know several people on the Texas Colts who are referenced in the story. The guy who fell wasn't hot, he was an ump who just hit the dirt. The coach who was hit was on a different field.

I mean, if they wanted to target the fields intentionally why do it from a fairly extreme distance?
AggieT

Agree. Seems like idiots, but who knows.

Still, who are these people, and why are they out shooting on some doctor's land?
