Starship flight 11 looks to be as early as Monday, October 11th. My kids are off the whole week for fall break so we booked a canal-front rental in Port Isabel. Should be able to see the launch while wetting a line if it works out well.

Any kid friendly bay guides for a half day 10/13 or 10/14? Kids are 6 &12.

Plan to drive down Highway 4 and see Starbase. What else should we do?

Unless there has been vast improvement in the last 2 decades, that would scar them for life.

The rental owner says there are no lights off the dock. Would it be worth rigging up my own to take? Or does a fishing light need some time to start attracting anything?

Go to the fishing pier by pirates landing. I am not sure if you are renting in Longisland Village or on the fingers in PI. If it is the fingers only properties on the main channel offer any chance of fish. In LIV I understand that only the properties near the intercoastal are worth fishing. The pier has has lights.

Call Jim's Pier, I think it is still open, or the Sea Ranch and ask for a guide. Most are pretty good. A couple that I still know that do trips are Janie and Freddy Petty out of Laguna Vista. Most of the ones I knew personally are either dead or retired.

If you wanna fish on your own, go to the surf and rig up a small hook with a spider weight and smaller hook and chase whiting. If you can get up onto the north end of the Island on the beach take some silver or gold spoons and in the first and second gut, caveat look for birds and bait, there will be Spanish mackerel. The previous weather and somewhat flat surf contingent.

Take the kids to the Sea Turtle deal, walk the jetties (you can even fish there) and there is other stuff to do.

Solid trip on a lot of fronts. I'm not much of a fisherman these days so my kids haven't had a lot of good opportunities. Pretty sure this drum is my 12 year old daughter's first catch.

That is an Atlantic Croaker, commonly called croaker.
