My son loves to fish and hunt. He has grown up these last couple years and I can easily trust him. Although he ran out of gas in the Mule hauling the guts off.
He has been doing his own dove hunting and cleaning, and this past weekend, he finally caught his first yellow on a rod.

He goes out to the ponds and catches live bait, usually minnows and will head to the river. This time, I let him take the Mule so I didn't have to pick him up later. He has been obsessed on catching a big gar, and I bought him some metal leaders to help keep from breaking off.

This past week, he not only caught a few gar, but also a soft shell turtle, nice channel cat and this yellow. We did let the turtle go. Super proud dad here. I got us a blast and cast booked for November and got him a new shotgun for it as well. This spring he even called up and harvested his first turkey by himself. I had to tell my wife it's ok if I get him this shotgun, because we have spent that much money on the younger siblings for baseball, volleyball, and softball. We never really did that with him.

That's how to raise a child!

Guns, outdoors, and God.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Watching your kids grow into their passions is both awesome and frustrating.
Frustrating because they might not align with your own.
Awesome because you get to watch them grow.

Parenting is a balance of holding on and letting go.

Good job dad on letting him bloom.

We are semi-funding college grads vacations now…. National Parks etc….. we were convinced as jr high and high school parents that athletics was how they wanted to spend their summers……. looking back, its how we thought they wanted to spend those summers! You can never get them back. In hindsight…..those summers carved their personalities…but they were our wishes really…. so vacations still are non baseball…. extended family fun!

Looking good! Next to that yellow, the softshell is the best eating. Did he hook the softshell in the mouth or the paw?

What river?

Great going! As the late Charlie Pack used to say on the closing of his fishing shows…" Keep them on the creeks and they won't be on the streets."

The turtle he hooked in the mouth. They take a while to clean, and we did not have that much time Sunday evening.

It's on the Guadalupe

Very cool. And yes, I won't pretend like I am any good at cleaning a softshell nor would I be quick at it. Hats off to you guys.

I saw this in the sea shell shop on the pier in Galveston before it was destroyed and rebuilt.

I stole it and put it on my Ag. Classroom door occasionally.

First… Teach a child to love God.
Teach them second to love their family.
Third, teach them to hunt and fish…

and by the time they reach their teens, no dope peddler under the sun will ever have a chance to teach them anything.
