Good morning OB!

Since you guys know stuff and tend to be DIY types I figured I'd ask this question here.

What have you guys done to re-attach hinges on cabinet doors where the screws on the hinge holes have become too loose, allowing for the hinges to fall out (leaving the cabinet without a door)?

I am thinking of drilling the hole slightly larger and inserting a wood glue covered dowel. Then just re-drill the hole and re-mount the door but would love to know how you guys have successfully handled this repair.

See pic. TIA.

Stick a toothpick in the hole and break it off flush with the wood surface. Reattach hinges with the original screws. Profit!

dip it in wood glue first. This is what I have always done

I had to re hang a bunch of cabinet doors in an old house we were restoring on the ranch. I tried using the wood glue- toothpick trick but many did not hold up.
The Amish guy that was helping me used this product.
When he redrilled the holes in it not a single one of the repairs went bad.

Stuff the hole with steel wool and see if that fixes the fit.

VERY CAREFULLY prop the cabinet door back up there, wait for the next person to open it and BOOM.....its now their problem!!

I knew there were going to be some folks who had purchased well-worn merchandise that were going to misinterpret the suggestion. I decided not to re-phrase it.

I would do exactly that. Use an oak dowel.

This is a problem with these fancy hidden hinges. The better solution is to have a visible hinge screwed into the front face. So much stronger.

Everbilt Mr. Grip Screw Hole Repair Kit (8-Pack) 801724 - The Home Depot

I used this kit to fix a cabinet hinge and it is still solid after a couple of years.

The wooden dowel idea is an established and effective method as well. Just used this to reset two door hinges in the frame of a composite bedroom door.

Determine dowel dia and length. Select drill bit to match. Drill hole, be sure to drill it deep enough to take dowel. Vacuum or blow out dust/shavings. Coat dowel w wood glue. Put dab of glue over hole. Insert dowel w gentle mallet/tap. Let dry 24 hrs. Sand surface roughly only if needed. Then re drill and insert your screws. Consider going slightly longer if possible. Hand tighten, don't over torque.
