Anyone have any recent costs on hiring a dozer operator?

I have an erosion repair (dirt) and small clearing project. My guess is it is around 60-80 hours of total work.

Here in the Ozarks I just paid $120/hour for a Cat 973 Crawler Loader for clearing large trees building fence lines, roads. Same company charges the same hourly rate for a dozer of comparable size Smaller machines run about 100 -110/hour. Skid Steers about 90/hour

I got a smaller dozer with a terrible operator to waste 40 hours of my time for a mere $80/hour.
Don't necessarily search for the bargain like my ranch partner does

Thank you all for your replies. That is about what I was expecting. My parents were getting screwed by the quotes they were receiving.

Any one know anyone in the Karnes County area?

Do the Beam family still do dirt work? Owned Shorties just south of Falls City and did dirt work. The old man, Cotton is long gone but he had several sons, and a hot daughter but that's another story,

I would have guessed around $100 an hour, glad to see I was in the ballpark from some of the posters. What were they quoted?

Don't forget to ask about move-in and move-out costs. Rigs requiring a semi or larger truck can add significant $$$.
Transport costs sometimes are minimized, if the amount of work allows it. Or they charge their next customer the move-out $$.

I have a buddy that does land clearing with a big skid steer. He'll work in the Karnes county area. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you in touch.

Unless you really need a dozer for the work. Then I would call Randy Gaydis in Pleasanton. He just cleared 30 acres for my dad.

Contact your county road and bridge department and ask for the lead manager. Ask him for a recommendation. Or, contact your county commissioner.

We had some dozer work done last year with a small Deere dozer, $125 an hour.

Bigger machine is more expensive per hour but will/should take fewer hours.

With a smaller machine, you may not have the same hauling costs to get the dozer on site.

I'll try to make it as short as possible.

Civil lawsuit. Happened several months ago. Need to keep some details private to protect my identity, so I'll change some non-essential facts.

Gist of the matter is guy rented bobcat to, allegedly, do some dirt work. At least, that's what he told my client. Said he does this all the time, knows what he is doing, etc. What was really going on was that this so-called crew was using the bobcat to do some tree/brush removal and uprooting. For small stuff WITH the right attachments, that can work but that wasn't part of the rental agreement. Plus, the smaller stuff wasn't what they were doing -- they were trying to take down larger, mature trees and put them into a burn pile. They were essentially using the bobcat for something it wasn't designed for.

As if that wasn't enough, for whatever reason (I guess the piles got too big), they try to move around the burning wood with the bobcat. You guessed it: due to that and the overall incompetence of the operator, the cat catches on fire! These geniuses had no fire suppression equipment -- no extinguishers, nothing. They attempt to put out the fire by shoveling dirt, including additional burning embers, on the bobcat engine!! The engine sustains serious damage. Had they sprayed this thing with a fire extinguisher -- even one with water -- it wouldn't have been a big issue. But the fire destroyed the electrical components, the rubber materials, etc.

The ****head who rented the bobcat tells my client the engine malfunctioned and caught fire on its own. My client tells me that out of thousands of similar rentals, tens to hundreds of thousands of hours on his rental units -- mostly Bobcats -- that's NEVER happened. These are diesel engines. A Bobcat is a great tool but it doesn't produce the energy/pressure it takes for the diesel to catch on fire absent SERIOUS stupidity. The guy who rented it thinks everyone else is as dumb as he is.

I'll spare you the numbers, but believe it or not, the unit was repaired. We won at trial -- guy didn't even show; hid behind his (weak) lawyers. Judge was almost waiting for me to finish my case so she could award us our damages!

I had my uncles New Holland skid steer I was borrowing when we first bought our ranch catch fire. The skid pan under the machine was full of old leaked oil, diesel fuel from leaks and millions of cedar needles. I was grappling and pushing cedar we had cut and started noticing smoke in the cab.
I stopped and saw small flames coming up from underneath…
BUT my uncle, thankfully, had two small fire extinguishers mounted on the machine and I was able to pretty quickly put it out and had no real damage.
We determined a cedar limb had apparently somehow caught on wires and caused a short that ignited the mess in the pan.
Moral to story…..I have fire extinguishers on every piece of equipment I have!!….and I try to keep my machines fairly clean from diesel and old grease/oil too.
