Looking to buy a youth shotgun for my 9 year old son. Anyone have one collecting dust in the back of their gun safe that would be interested in selling?

If not, any recommendations? Most important thing is fit right now. Don't think he is ready for much more than a 410 or 28 gauge kick right now.

Cross posting in Classifieds.

I would recommend a gas operated 20 gauge semi with a youth stock, that can later be upgraded to a full size stock. He will outgrow the youth stock before you know it, and upgrading to the adult stock will make it a lifetime gun. On the other hand, you can look for a used full sized 20 ga (something like a beretta a300) and then order a youth stock, then switching them back out in a few years.

From working with a ton of kids, any kid who is strong enough to hold up a shotgun can handle a gas operated 20 gauge

I posted on your ad on the other forum.

The A300 is a good one.

Generations of kids have learned how shoot with a Remington 870 Youth 20 ga. They have some kick, but limbsaver pads help.

I was in your situation a few years back and ended up just buying a full size 20ga semi-auto, cause I couldnt find a single youth model. I took out all the spacers and tried to get the LOP as short as possible. It was heavy for my son at first, but he got used to it, got stronger, and enjoyed shooting it. Now that he's older (13), he's got a gun he can handle and that can grow with him. Plus I've got a gun his momma can shoot as well whenever she wants to go blasting. YMMV.

In the book "Shotgunning: The Art and the Science" the author strongly suggests buying kids a 20 Ga. Under NO circumstances should a kid be given a .410 or a 28 Ga because these are guns for experts. The limited amount of pellets in 410/20 Ga will simply frustrate most (read: every) young shooter.

As several folks have mentioned here, a Berretta 20 Ga youth model is an excellent gun. My son learned to bird hunt with this gun from age 6 or 7 forward.

I'm also a big fan of the Remington 1100 (maybe 1187 on newer models).

Just get a 410 or 28ga single shot and put a recoil eraser pad on it.

I have a youth O/U shotgun collecting dust in my safe. Will check out the gauge tonight. It has never been fired. Bought it to use for scouts but timing never worked.

Believe it is a Yildiz, will check the gauge but think it is a 20 gauge.

I bought my son a Tristar compact 20 ga when he was 9. He's pretty small of stature so he still tires quickly - has trouble getting leverage on the forearm. The recoil has never been an issue for him.

ETA - wow, once I looked closer it looks like their MSRP has increased 50% since my purchase.

Start him out with a single shot .410 or 20 gauge. Once he becomes proficient with that, move up to a semi or a pump.

My approach is we load 1 shell. A single shot is going to have more recoil just like a 870. I wanted a 20 ga since I have trouble hitting targets w/ a .410 or 28 ga.

Look for a Weatherby SA-08 compact in 20 ga. I believe it only comes in a black synthetic stock.

We have Beretta A400s and an A300. The gas operation structure and components of the SA-08 are almost identical to the A300 & A400.

We've never had a problem with it cycling and shoots well for a fraction of the price.

x2 for weatherby sa-08. Went down this road last year. Ended up finding a decent deal on a Weatherby sa-08 20 ga. on gunbroker. Very pleased with it

The only negative I've found with the SA-08 is the bolt release is not oversized and can be hard for younger shooters to push. This can be solved by having a gunsmith install an oversized bolt release

Lol. How I started. .410, then graduated to an H&R single-shot .20g

Learned real quick to make that shot count

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 youth shotgun that I can see if my son wants to part with. Kinda like an ARVN rifle, but instead of "Never shot and only dropped once" this one is "Only shot once and never dropped."

He shot clays one time with it and in the middle of the round started shooting my 12ga. and never went back to the 20ga. Just sitting in the gun cabinet.

He was 8 when he got it, so I am sure a 9-year-old can handle a 20ga.

Bought a daly 601 youth 20ga for my son's next shotgun, shot it for the first time yesterday, very light and almost no recoil. Pleasantly surprised with the trigger as well. It's still a little big for him at almost 10. He has been shooting a Stevens 301 youth 410 for a little over a year now and shoots it really well. I cut an inch or so off the stock and stuffed 2 6oz egg sinkers and foam in the butt, added a slip on limbsaver pad, then put a couple wheel weights in the forearm to make it balance right at the front of the trigger guard. Oh also ordered a mod choke, it didn't come with one and uses something funny like an extended mobil choke or something, it was like $15 from Savage

Bump because I'm looking to buy my son (12 yo) a shotgun for Christmas.

I'm thinking a 20 gauge, semi-auto for the reasons mentioned above. Youth model for sure- he has shot my gun and it's way too big for him. He is small for a 12 yo.

  • Does he need to hold them (ie see which one feels best)? I'd like to surprise him, so I want to just buy it myself.
  • Any recs on model given the above criteria? youth, 20 gauge, semi-auto

I would say for a youngster, unless he has shot a lot, not sure he would be able to pick up on gun fit by holdingbthem. I would guess at this stage it wont really matter much. Also, lots of new semis are going to have shim kits to tweak fit.

Biggest question is budget ???
