Past due for buying an O/U. Going to go shoulder some around town before buying, but wanted to get OBs guidance beforehand. Indifferent to 12 or 20 gauge.

Budget is up to $2,000, happy to spend less obviously. Used isn't out of the question, but I need by end of October.

A little bit higher than $2k, but you can't go wrong with an entry-level Browning Cynergy or Citori, depending on your intended use.

Love my Silver Pigeons but I think they're over that budget now.

Silver Pigeon

Wow, I just looked and a Silver Pigeon 1 field grade is now on sale at Cabela's for $2300. I had no idea they had increased in price. I got a steal on a gently used Silver Pigeon II with a custom Cole stock with Mueller tubes in 2021 for $1250. Definitely check online sales for used guns, especially if you have been fitted in the past and the guns specs fit you.

Browning Citori field gun can be found within that budget. Their more decorative models will run a little more.

Killed more doves with my Yildiz last weekend than another with his Browning. I like cheap shotguns.

You really need to test fire first. I had a Grade III Sporting that was my favorite gun.......to look at. The Silver Pigeon geometry never fit me well. I hung on for 10 years and tried to give it to each of my boys who never liked it either. My Citori 725 Soorting is perfect, but my older Citori 525 felt like a 2x4.

I can shoot Semi-Autos and pumps interchangeably, but OUs are a different ballgame. YMMV as they say.

Regardless, go used at $2,000. It's no man's land for a new O/U right now.

I don't think there's a better O/U made than the 725 Sporting.

A senior Ag I know sells for them. Really nice guns. Bought one a couple of months ago. Made in the UK since 1790

For what you described, I'd go 12 gauge with 28" barrels for an all around gun. I prefer the Beretta silver pigeon

Like everyone else said, guns shoulder different for different people. The browning o/us I've tried do not shoulder well for me- the vent rib and the bead just don't align naturally, regardless of adjustments. But the beretta silver pigeon is a natural fit.
Same with semi autos. If I shoulder the gun and I'm looking down at part of the vent rib, it doesn't "fit".

I've enjoyed my Browning Citori Lightning 12 gauge with 28" barrels for many years. It fits me well and has been dead reliable in the field and for clays.

I have a CZ drake/Teal in both 12ga and 410. If you don't have to have ejectors, they are solid in the field.

these posts talking about shouldering a gun are dead on…. a few weeks ago I splurged on a weekend dove hunting trip… not my norm…and outta town so I loaded up my trusty ol Rem 1100… and threw wifes Benelli in for a backup. Of course hunt 1 of 5 on a thurday evening…. trusty 1100 wont eject…. after hour or so of basically non stop birds… I stop and swap….. didnt get dialed in on shouldering Benelli til last hunt on Sat evening. Nothing wrong with Benelli it was just different than my 20 yr old 1100.
For the record… neither gun qualifies for O/U qualifier of OP.

Look for a used Silver Pigeon in the Cabela's gun room.

The right answer here is a nice, used Citori. They're just unbreakable. They hold value like mad, they wear well so a used gun in good condition won't be hard to find, their chokes, stocks, kick pads, barrel beads, etc are all easily available on the market for replacement if needed. While a little heavy, they're just indestructible.

For those branching into double guns, that's always my suggestion for O/U's.

As many have already posted, Beretta 686 or Browning Citori would be my recommendation as they are the gold standard for what you are looking for. They fit quite different. Some people are Beretta people, some people are Browning people. You have to hold and preferably shoot both to decide which one you are. You can prob find a used one in your budget.

BUT....If I were in your shoes, and had to stay under $2k and wanted a nice, new field gun, I would go with a Franchi

I love my 686 Silver Onyx. A little less money than a Silver Pigeon, but essentially the same gun.
