Short of killing them, what is a good home remedy to deter squirrels? My cedar elm is seeding right now and I've got two squirrels who are feasting on it and causing a huge mess.

Squirrels are Squirrels. They are feeding up right now due to winter coming. Natural for them to do that. It will pass. We got them all around our hickory and red and white oaks right now. It's part of living in the country. Unless you eradicate the species to extinction, if you kill them others move him. As long as there is a food source they will come.
Heck we enjoy watching their antics. Part of the reason we live rural.
My grandparents used to put plastic owls and snakes around their trees. Seemed to work but you gotta move them every so often or they get used to them.

Darn tree rats are taking pecans off my trees while still in the green outer shell.

Don't go with an OB recommended one. It would cost you a fortune and be able to bring down a rhino.

If you're going to shoot them with a BB gun you will probably wound them, blind them or mame them. Squirrels don't have thick hides at all. The BB's penetrate the skin and then get infected and they die slowly.
If they bother you that much, better off killing them than maiming them.

Really? We had bb gun fights all the time as kids. Those old Daisys never broke the skin.
Dang. I didn't know this. Figured it was good fun to plink them at 5 to 10 yards.

Yes sir. I worked for a veterinarian during the summers during junior high. He constantly had folks bringing in wounded cottontails and squirrels that had grotesque infections from bb's under the skin, or shot in the eye or foot.
Made me never shoot my BB gun at them again. If I shoot a squirrel I'm going to skin it and eat it. We were so damn poor we considered squirrel like a steak!

Thank you for the correction. I enjoy watching the squirrels and chasing them from the bird feeders is fun. I have not shot a one in probably 40 years but back then didn't know any better.

Welcome to my world. But I was lucky enough this year to have one tree (have 3 total) that produced so many that even the vermin rodents can't keep up and I have gotten a decent amount of pecans for first time in years. I have tried pretty much everything short of shooting them (which I would do if not in residential subdivision).

Classic wrist rocket and use acorns as ammo - unlimited supply of ammo and reduces potential for breaking windows if in close quarters to others.
Sends them scurrying and makes it a little more sporty considering the aerodynamics of a acorn are far from perfect

At the end mine had a "stream" worse than an old man's urine.

Get a terrier. Mine needs a recalibration but is trying his best. That squirrel is getting fatter and slower by the day though.
Guess it won't put his eye out as well.
